He'll be tearing apart old computers, televisions, etc., for recycling. It's a temp job, but if they like him after 90 days, he might get hired on as a regular employee.

I'm asking for good thoughts and prayers to flow his way.

Thanks.

Having a job to go to can give a person so much self-respect. I hope he finds he can cope with it, even though going to work can sometimes be no fun at all. My family member who has not worked for a long while, is really stressed by not having something constructive to do. I was giving him projects to do for me, but that didn't work out well. He would overestimate what he was capable of doing. Tearing things apart can sometimes be done successfully, when putting things together is overly challenging. My family member is great at clearing out weeds. He always loved to be physically active. I hope the activity will be a positive outlet for your son.
Thanks for this!

Thanks, Rose and Laura. My son is really, really bored at home all day. He needs to be productive and around other people. And a paycheck wouldn't hurt either!
Thanks for this!

Wow, that's wonderful news! Do they know about his diagnoses? I only ask because if they do then they might be more understanding. But regardless... well done him on getting it! I'll definitely be praying for him (and you.) This could be key to his recovery. You must be very proud of him. Is it full or part time? I know on days when I can get into my voluntary work I feel much better than usual, it has positive knock on effects for the whole day.

They don't, and I'm not sure if we should tell them. He just got assigned to a voc rehab counselor. They have their first appointment on Aug. 5. He might be able to advise on whether that's a good idea or not. I may call him on Monday and ask what he thinks.

I am proud of him. He went out and found this himself. I hope it helps him in his recovery.

It's fulltime. 7 am to 4 pm weekdays. He was so happy, he didn't even ask what they're paying!

I'm really glad that he found this by himself. It's good for him to know that he has the ability to go and do this kind of thing. If they don't already know about his diagnoses my advice would be not to tell them ... at least until he has got offered a permanent position. Then, if he's been offered a position they can't withdraw it without making prejudice obvious. Still, check with folks who know UK law etc. I've told the employer I work for voluntarily, and it's fine, but of course, she's not paying me. And I am certain I'd not dare tell someone else. Seriously, there are a lot of people I meet on a daily basis that I would shrivel up and die about if they ever found out!

I'm managing from half nine to half twelve three days a week. If this works out it's perfect, if it's not perfect, don't worry, he'll still find something. I don't know why, maybe I'm basing this on my own unhappy work experience, but I just want to let you know that what is important at this stage is his effort and ultimate recovery. If it doesn't work out now it will do later.

Well, the job didn't work out. He was asked not to come back after the first day. He was pretty depressed about it Monday evening, but he bounced back quickly. By Tuesday evening he was cheerful, and today he said he wants to keep trying. He has an appointment with a voc rehab counselor on Friday, August 5.

I think this resilience is a good sign of health.

It does sound good that he has a more positive attitude. Glad to hear it after the discouragement on Monday. Seems like he's learning to take his knocks as they come, and accept that's what life does.

I think you are right to take his positive reaction as a very encouraging sign. I believe that if he, or anyone, maintains that ability to rebound, then something eventually will work out. Furthermore, it is apt to be something that he'll be better off doing than the job that didn't pan out.
Thanks for this!
