You have a job analyzing dictators?

I would have a difficult time with it, for sure.
However, if everyone who did it started out mentally stable, they would just wind up unstable anyways, don't you think? Too much bad news.

Costello, I work in a newspaper that focusses on the Middle East . . . so yeah. All we do is talk about war crimes and dictators and other horrific stuff. Syria is brought up several times a day, as is Yemen, and Iran, and the Sudan . . .

I seriously think you need to find a different job. The environment we live in has a huge effect on our mental health - whether it's our family, job, community, religion. I spent too much time reading political news and commentary and the stupid anonymous posters that make idiotic comments. Even that can leave me so depressed or so angry or so fearful.

You need a wholesome work environment - both the work and your coworkers should be pleasant.

It's not that simple. Because I'm not a British/EU national, I am last priority for jobs because I need a sponsored work visa. Never mind that there are no jobs and youth unemployment is something crazy high like 25%. I am looking for work, but it seems like I can either be a barrister or I can work for this crazy newspaper. I have nice coworkers, though.

Is this why you were thinking about moving home?

Yep.
Well, that and if I did I really could help my mother pay down her debt.

I am thinking about teaching legal studies at a Canadian university -- I have an interview for it, too.

Screw your mother's debt. That's her problem. But if it gets you away from that job, I say do it!

Good idea. Or go to Africa. That would be fun. I bet you could teach legal studies in Botswana.

It's good you enjoy your co-workers at least. That can make a big difference. I've had jobs before that I absolutely hated, but there were a couple people there that I enjoyed talking to, and I wouldn't have seen them otherwise. Made the day go better.
I really prefer to work alone though, which is difficult to find jobs doing.

She gave me some money for my education. I plan to pay that back to her, and no more, but if I pay it now then I can stop worrying about it.

I don't take heat well, and honestly after five international moves in eight years I'm tired of rocking up in new countries and being completely lost. I'd like to go somewhere with a built-in support network for a while.

I used to work as a freelance translator (i.e., all alone in my room) and it was hell for me. I like the structure of the office and having people around. We go out for lunch and chat and the English and French desks mock the insanity of the dictatorships.

And the Persian desk (which is one lady ) constantly brings around sweets. Best part of the job -- "Here, take this random Iranian sweet that we have NO IDEA what it tastes like!" I think today's was pistachio flavoured.

Learn eleventy billion languages and be a translator.

Or you could do sub-editing and publication management -- like the person who makes sure all the commas and footnotes and page numbers are correct.

Graphic designers also often work from home.

I like minimalism and Rothko I saw this cool exhibition of Bauhaus the other day, do you like their stuff? What's your painting like?

Tangentially related -- I'm watching this documentary about tiny houses and minimalist architecture:

@newtus - I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to know. Thank you. I can appreciate minimalist.

@fishsandwich - I do not seem to have a knack for languages. I would absolutely love editing though! That's the sort of thing I could get really happily obsessive about. I've looked for proof reading/editing sorts of jobs before, and I could never find anything. That's a good suggestion though. If I could ever find that, I'd be happy.

Look at think tanks; a lot of them are moving their editing departments to freelance because it's cheaper for them -- they don't have to pay for office space or benefits/pensions.
