Also sounds like a question better put to a doctor! Or maybe Google will have answers you will find helpful, like: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/003469.htm Quote:

I have been going through this for several years.
I even had somebody in a white SUV chase me. Then they just backed off like it was nothing. I put foil on my windows, I thought it would prevent them from seeing what I do on my computer.I'm not doing anything wrong, so everybody says not to worry. I have paranoid thoughts all the time. Even with all the meds I'm on. It can be very scary at times. I feel like a criminal too. I got pulled over by the cops for no reason. They wanted to search my truck. I said go ahead if it makes you feel better. The bastard had the nerve to tell me I should move to a different county. The kind of sz I have is paranoid type. I think they already knew what they were going to do.They were looking for drugs. Three of them. He said the reason they pulled me over, was because I pulled out on to the road, and did not put my headlights on soon enough.I can't stand abused authority. These cops are people just like us, but who enforces the law with them. Nobody.......so they get away with murder. That is until they are kicked off the force. Sorry for the ranting. I do hope you will get better. It's good to know that somebody has hope for you. Get well soon. |

I worry about diabetes too, because a lot of people in my family have it. Do you feel OK to ask your doctor about it?

Hey newtus. If you do have diabetes it can be well controlled or even cleared away with the right diet and exercise, maybe meds like Metformin/Glucophage, so you may not even need shots. If you're concerned about it talk with your doctor, and consider dieting and exercising to prevent it if you don't have it yet.

It's really difficult to deal with physical health problems in addition to mental health concerns. I'm sorry you may have to deal with that. Sometimes though when you get the body healthier, it's amazing how much better the mind feels. Maybe if you have physical health issues to be addressed, you will begin to feel better overall. And don't be afraid to ask doctors and nurses to explain test results if you don't understand. Sometimes they forget that the average person doesn't know as much medical terminology, or have as much medical knowledge as they do. You have the right to ask questions, and to have them help you understand everything you need to know about your health.

You can research that kind of thing online these days. I'm just really glad to hear you've had a physical. One of the things that irritates me about mental health folks is how they sometimes dx a mental illness without checking for physical causes.

Are they supposed to check for physical causes? I've never had that done.

I think they should. I'm not saying a physical cause can be found very often, but it should be eliminated if possible IMO.

Stories like these disturb me:
I have coworker who had a sister-in-law dx'd with bipolar. Incredibly unstable. Had a hard time holding a job or maintaining a relationship. Very unhappy woman. One day she passes out. Her bf finds her and gets her to the hospital where she recovers, but they can't figure out what's wrong with her. A year later she passes out again. This time no one finds her. She dies. She's about 40 years old. Four months after she died they finally figure out she had diabetes! Diabetes! The woman died of diabetes. And she was a serious hypochondriac. Always at the doctor. Now I have to wonder how much of her bipolar disease wasn't just unstable blood sugar. Certainly it couldn't have helped.

@costello: ANY person brought to an ER or dr's office for fainting should have their blood glucose tested! It's an incredibly simple test, and you can have the results in less than 5 minutes.
It's so sad they didn't run this simple test to save her life. As a note, my wife is both diabetic (type 1) and bipolar. There is a huge difference between the symptoms of each, but I recognize I may just feel that way because I know her so well. @everyone else: physical health problems should absolutely be considered!!! I hope that everyone here is healthy, of course, but there are many symptoms which may appear psychiatric in nature that are actually the result of physical health problems. Having these problems ruled out is, I feel, essential. (btw I am being a horrible hypocrite right now, as I HATE going to the dr! But I still believe it's true.) |

I've long since given up trying to get anything useful out of real doctors. I could have every disease known to man (like Mr. Burns!) and nobody would ever know. It's just curious, because nobody ever checked me for any physical problems. Except they weighed me an awful lot -- I wonder what that was all about?

But I can imagine that somebody who was not thinking -- or who was trained to view the world through the "psychiatric" lens, like a MH professional -- might mistake it for some kind of bipolar.

I agree, there's no excuse for not discovering her illness sooner - like any time before she actually died.
![]() I have the impression she was a very unlikable person. My coworker certainly didn't like her - and seems to have gained no compassion since her death. And she had a reputation for being a hypochrondiac. In my experience, either a psych dx or the hypochondriac thing is likely to get you written off as a whiner by doctors. Add middle aged woman and you have a triple play. I think she had type II diabetes. She had been obese at one point but managed to lose down to a normal weight and maintained the weight loss for many years. A feat in itself.

I finally figured out that if I wanted sugar I had to have it at bedtime, so I could "sleep it off." ![]() Yes, I can easily imagine that if I'd gone to a pdoc I might have been diagnosed as bipolar. And I know that doctors wouldn't have figured it out, because periodically I'd go see a doctor for the extreme fatigue I was feeling. They'd run some blood tests and tell me I was fine.

No doctor ever would have figured that out, though. I have no idea if they even accept it as a possibility; but the certainly never asked. I even mentioned once that the drugs made my period stop [and maybe that's why I was feeling a bit better] and they said I was just "to ill" to remember when I got it.

Eventually I did quit by tapering off very slowly. I can't remember now if it was before or after I went low carb. You know when I think about this stuff, it seriously irritates me. ![]()

I want to cut waaaay back on sugar, but it's one of my biggest problems. (As are carbohydrates generally.) I can hardly stay away for more than a half a day before I semi-mindlessly eat something sweet. And that is in spite of the rest of my diet being pretty damn healthy.
So how did you beat it in the end?

Also, I am suspicious the attitude of doctors that if there is something wrong and they can't work out the cause, they give antidepressants. What the hell is up with that??

In April I started my high fish diet. I've let lots of grains creep back in. And sugar. And my back and hip pain mysteriously returned. It's awful. It's not as bad as it was before, but now I'm wondering if it eventually will be if I don't kick the refined carbs and sugar out again. Quote:
