I think you need to hear voices for it to be schizophrenia, I'm pretty sure about that, but I don't have schizophrenia, so I'm not 100 % about it.

I don't experience voices but I hear music, particularly from decades ago, and the more stressed I get the louder it becomes. The music can become so loud it's almost deafening.

Think it's very debatable what 'delusions' are to begin with. I'd say that I no longer have them. It's complex to describe what my difficulties are. I'd also say that 'schizophrenia' & all psychiatric diagnosis are open to a lot of debate & questions, as to what they actaully are.

I think the dx is just like in bipolar for example, where you have to have so many of the symptoms but not all of them. Everyone probably has different combinations of symptoms.

I know nothing about this but ill give a guess that it would be all good if we agree that a schizophrenia diagnosis is made if it is reeeally bad or moderate or distresses the patient greatly and it goes on and on for ages.. Like terrible non stop voices with delusions that directs you away from reality and the same goes with seeing stuff uh.. without hearing voices because a schizophrenia diagnosis is a lifetime diagnosis i think for most people anyways and it wouldn't be good to say to someone that is seeing a few things or that is hearing a few things to say "you now have schizophrenia!!" it would just turn their life around and make them really upset.
Edit: Actually wait, my post doesn't make any sense. If a person is wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia, then they wouldn't be all upset because they never went through the real symptoms.. But what ever you get what i mean.. i think.. |

Schizophrenia is classified with two types of symptoms. Since it is classified as a psychotic illness you do need to experience psychotic symptoms to be diagnosed with it. The two types of symptoms are refereed to as "positive" and negative symptoms. They refer to hallucinations as "positive". That includes voices and visual hallucinations (as well as other senses). Delusions and other similar symptoms are classified as negative symptoms. There are plenty of schizophrenics who don't experience the "positive" symptoms that often . Refer to the DSM-IV TR or DSM-V for more information. (as well as members with schizophrenia).
Please note: A grand misconception of the public is ANY psychotic symptom means you have Schizophrenia. This couldn't be further from the truth. My own mother believes my uncle is Schizophrenic. This is untrue. Also another misconception is "Multiple Personality Disorder" is the same as Schizophrenia. "Multiple Personality Disorder" has been removed from the DSM, and has nothing to do with Schizophrenia. |
