Health News - Hormone Could Ease Symptoms of Psychosis and Overeating

So this is really intersting this hormone called amylin which already exists in synthetic form as a diabetes treatment may block some sz symptoms. They were only using rats so they couldn't ask if they were hallucinating but used prepulse inhibition instead(startle response). Anyway it's involved in the food reward system so it has weight control properties and might be a good supplement for anyone on one of the obesity promoting APs....however it's still prescription and is apparently only used once you are already on insulin. Still this may apply to a subset of people with sz so I'm posting it here...

Oh yeah, I know a lot about amylin. It's a medicine called Byetta which is injectable. It actually promotes weight loss, making you feel full longer. It has something to do with your GLP1 hormone and is a synthetic of gila monster enzymes, (I think, I know it's a big lizard.) They noticed gila monsters only eat like once a year, and wondered why. One problem with diabetes is you never feel full. So people keep eating. This helps people feel full.

Unfortunatley there is a high rate of intolerance that causes nausea and vomiting, but they developed a new med called Bydureon, which you only inject once a week, people seem to do better on that. There's also another med called Victoza which is similar and a competitors product. People really do lose weight on these products, and it makes them feel full so they eat less. However, there's also a risk of pancreatitus so I can't ever take any of them.

Yeah I thought this was interesting though because its an antipsychotic in addition to the weight loss phenotype so it might work out great for some people. Gila monsters that is so cool----I had no idea---I did a report on those guys in 4th grade but that's about all I can remember is that I did the report...

Yeah, it's pretty funny and interesting. That's why they have a lizard in a lot of their ad campeigns. I'm really curious to see where this goes. If they can get one that works for psychosis and diabetes that would be amazing since so many people get diabetes thanks to the other psych meds. Because, honestly, this medication works really, really well for type 2 diabetes. We use it a lot and see great results with so many people.

My mom is a chemist/biologist who worked in pharmaceutical research, so every time I go on a new med, she looks at the structure to see what it's similar to (and thus she can tell what the side effects are likely to be, etc.) She said that blood pressure meds had a similar structure/affect the same receptors as some antipsychotics. She has a theory that some people on these blood pressure meds might have developed psychosis were it not for the blood pressure meds. It's pretty interesting (apparently) if you understand it (which I don't lol.)

Interesting but the D2 dopamine receptor blockade like with APs actually causes high blood pressure so I think it's more likely that the blood pressure meds would act in the opposite way and potentially induce psychosis.

Here is a paper I found on some kidney d2 knock-out mice...

PLOS ONE: Deficient Dopamine D2 Receptor Function Causes Renal Inflammation Independently of High Blood Pressure

So no d2 in the kidney and BP increases....I don't know specifically which BP meds she was talking about though...

It might not have been blood pressure meds then. I can't remember specifically what she said because I wasn't really paying attention. XD

Is there a difference between how atypicals affect blood pressure or is it all the same? I was on Abilify at the time so I think she was referring to that.

Chem was my least favorite subject in case you couldn't tell haha.

Oh well abilify is unique it's a partial agonist so it weakly activates D2 where every other AP inactivates it. I can't guess what the effect on BP is because abilify acts uniquely depending on the endogenous dopamine levels in any region it can be either activating where there is low dopamine or inactivating where dopamine is high because it blocks the receptor but only signals weakly...

Yeah if you find out what it was let me know...

I wonder if this is why I responded so badly to abilify with all the crazy side effects. Hard to say, of course.

Ok ok, so apparently I totally misremembered what she said (don't judge me, lol, this was a year ago).

Lol I wish, I just copied the format for quotes. Actually I'm glad she's not on here because that would make me super paranoid...
