meds affect everyone differently so what might work for me might not work for you. u cant know until u give it a try. what we say if it worked for us or not is a moot point. because everyones chemistry is different

When I was on seroquel I found it very effective as a mood stabilizer. Within the first few days I felt really well. And it also helped keep mood swings further apart for me since I have mood swings multiple times a day or for a week. Seroquel made them weeks or months apart.
It also really helps with sleep which is really nice. I would definitely recommend this medication

Seroquel made me gain a lot of weight, but it was really good as far as akathisia, tiredness, galactorrhea, and other side effects I've had on APs go... Never used it as a mood stabilizer though.

I think anything sedating can help mood if your anxious or scared. Mood can be linked to thoughts too so if you can help thoughts you can help mood. Just my two cents

Personally I found seroquel/quetiapine useless both as a antipsychotic and a mood stabiliser, but YMMV.

In terms of mood stabilisers, there's lithium, lamictal/lamotrigine, carbamazepine/Tegretol and sodium valproate/depakote. Those are the big ones that I know about. You might find it helpful to post in the bipolar forum.

Also this website is good for bipolar in general (though more focused on bp2) and this page is specifically about mood stabilisers:

mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder

All the best

I've been on seroguel since 2005 and it works well for me. I take it in combo with Latuda and depakote. That combo seems to work the best for me. Before the Latuda I was on haldol and it was effective but caused me brain fog and sedation.

There are three main types of mood stabilizers: antipsychotics, lithium, and anticonvulsants. If you have a problem with depression in bipolar, antidepressants can be used in conjunction with a mood stabilizer. Using ADs alone can cause mania and rapid cycling so that's not recommended.
Antipsychotics are especially helpful for people who have bipolar with psychotic features. I don't think they do much for bipolar depression, but I'd have to check with that. The dosages for APs are usually less compared to schizophrenia when used for bipolar. I took lithium to help with depression, and it helped even though I'm not really bipolar. Don't know much about the use of anticonvulsants though.
