JAMA Network | JAMA | Researchers Focus on Recovery in Schizophrenia

This is really kind of a nice article because it's targeted to MD's in general and fighting the kind of misinformation they may have picked up. It's an article on recovery, the ability to function in society even with positive symptoms and the benefits of early treatment. There are some aspects I don't like, like treating people before they develop psychosis but overall I'm glad to see a number of approaches being addressed.

This is a really good article. I sent it to my son - and I try not to do that too often, because I think it annoys him.

Strategies of those you've recovered from sz according to one study:

"Their strategies included taking medications as prescribed, staying physically healthy and getting enough exercise, controlling the amount of stimulation in their environment, and being involved in the mental health recovery movement. The importance of meaningful work and friendship were also common themes that emerged from the interviews."

The article goes on to say this: "'Although these individuals are high functioning, their lives aren’t easy,' emphasized Marder. Nevertheless, they’ve learned to cope with their symptoms and have been able to live full lives, reminding clinicians that an optimistic outcome in schizophrenia is possible, he said."

I also sent a copy to our dean of students. We had a student acting peculiar in the library last semester, and I went to the dean of students to express my concern. She was aware of the situation and working with the student, who had a psychotic disorder, to help her.

I told the dean I hoped the student would be able to continue and finish her degree. She smiled, but she also looked skeptical and said that they'd had other students with a similar dx and none had been able to complete their degrees.

I really think having people around you who believe in you can make the difference. I hope the dean reads this article and realizes that recovery is a real thing and not just the fantasy of a parent of a son dx'd with sz. Because that's kind of how I felt she was thinking. "Poor deluded woman. She actually thinks her son might get well."

Sorry for so many comments in a row.

I messaged this article to my son via facebook, and he's already read it and texted me.

It mentions in there that brain training can be helpful. My son plays lumosity and says it really helped him. He told his pdoc, but he was dismissive. My son's going to email the article to him.

Thanks Costello...I did think it was a good article but I'll be honest I mostly decided to post it just as a set up for the joke...it's definitely a great review of some of the stuff that's out there regarding recovery but I felt like we have discussed most of it before on here but yeah this is a very concise article that's easily shared and from a very reputable source...I'm glad you liked it

Yeah I do lumosity too...I agree that it helps....also somehow it adds to my motivation when I'm slumping a bit. It feels like you accomplished something even though it's easy and fun and that moves you on to bigger things...

Yes, it's almost all stuff we've talked about before. What I love is that it's short enough to convince someone to read and it's in an "official" journal rather than an anti-psychiatry site.

They mention auditory training. I don't think I've seen that mentioned before. I own a program that's supposed to help with auditory processing. I wonder if that's the same thing.

Yeah so the posit sz specific training has an auditory component....I don't know if it's been released to the public yet. Last I heard they were trying to get funding for it via insurance instead like it's therapy or something but yeah those guys do much more rigorous studies than lumosity but lumosity is cheap....
I bet the program you have would work though...

The program I own is from Posit. It's designed for older people. It would be cool if it worked, because they're really expensive programs.

It would be great if insurance (Medicare) would pay for the sz specific training from Posit.

Yeah it doesn't look like the sz one is released yet but yeah if medicare can pay for a T why not a video game as long as it's effective....I hope it works out for them....
