Was given my diagnosis of Schizotypal Personality Disorder today. Not what I was expecting, not real sure how process this, what to think of this, been arguing with my Mom all Spring long about the voices and things she thinks I hear and see, then Monday she denied ever saying it. Now I get this diagnosis.

Does the diagnosis make sense to you? Whenever I would get a diagnosis, I would spend time reflecting on the diagnosis and researching about it and it's treatment - maybe that would help you? At the end of the day, a diagnosis only holds the power that you give it. If you think it fits and provides a useful way for you to conceptualise your difficulties, then great. If not, discard it, or fight for one you feel is more accurate.

Hi welcome...I don't know much about schizotypal to be honest but it doesn't look like you're on an anti-psychotic....those tend to really help some people with voices etc. I'm not sure if they are typically given for schizotypal or not because there can be other strategies of dealing with voices especially if you can realize that they aren't real. But like willow I'm wondering how you feel about this...if it doesn't resonate with you it might be wrong....I saw this article where psychiatrists were given a story about a patient and asked to make a diagnosis....they only agreed on the diagnosis like 50% of the time which is pretty bad...the diagnostic process even with the dsm is not all that standardized. I know when I got sick I read everything I could get my hands on....first person accounts were the best...

I spent the weekend pondering it, and it makes a lot of sense, considering my history. Now I just have to see what new meds they'll want to add to my daily regiment. I only list the mental meds, not the physical meds. Fun fun fun. ;-)
