Hi, My father is 78 years old and is taking haldol drops (Haloperidol 10mg/5ml Oral Solution). I would like to know how miligrams or ml corresponds per drop.

Haloperidol 10mg/5ml Oral Solution: medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/28299

Patient Information Leaflet (PIL): medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/28301

Please advise!

Thanks.

The problem is that I cannot count how many drops to give him each time-doses (morning, midday, night).

The leaflet says:

Adults
  • initial dose: 3mg to 15mg daily split into two or three doses
  • maintenance dose: the dose will be gradually reduced to 5mg to 10mg daily.
  • The maximum dose for all treatments is 30mg a day.

3 mg is 6 drops 15 mg is 30 drops.....so between 3 to 15 drops 2x per day or 2 to 10 drops 3 times per day.

If you physically can't count the drops as they drop then there are pill forms as well as monthly injections available....

Good evening,

I'm back again and I would like to ask how Haldol drops work. Meaning, is it for instant action? for example like Xanax OR is acting like other medicines where the medicine need some time to react on the patient, for example like Seroquel.

I am asking that, in order to find out when Haldol drops are necessary to be taken. Should be given only at the time when the patient feels confusion?
Should be given within a specific time (for example, once or twice a day-fixed doses) regardless if the patient feels good or not?

Please advise!

Thanks

I think you should ask the doctor or pharmacist about this---its not really a common med and haldol is made in both fast acting and slow to very slow forms so I'm not sure about the drops.

The 0.5 mg drop value corresponds to 10mg/ml not the 10mg/5ml bottle.

If you assumed the dropper dispenses the same amount in North America and the UK then:

In the 10 mg/ml bottle 1 drop is equal to 0.5 mg so 20 drops would equal 1 ml. 0.5 mg x 20 drops = 10 mg/ml.

The 10 mg/2ml bottle reduces to 5 mg/ml. If 20 drops equals 1 ml then 1 drop is equal to 0.25 mg. 0.25 mg x 20 drops = 5 mg/ml

It is best to talk to a pharmacist about this.

Hi,

The dropper dispenser in UK counts from zero and fills up to 2.5ml. By using this type of dispenser, I count 15 drops for every 0.5ml.

This is the web-link of the medicine I am talking about: medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/28299
