im 19, almost 20, and recently applied for ssi due to my schizoaffective, anxiety and bpd. they said it would take 3-5 months to hear a reply back because i have so many references (1 residential hospital, 2 outpatient programs, 5 inpatient stays along with a handful of other therapists and psychiatrists.) my current pdoc strongly believes i can get it on my first try. does anyone have experience with this? she said if i was denied i could appeal it right away. honestly i need it now. i dont qualify for short term disability so im just cutting down my already short but unbearable 28 hour work week down to like a 14 hour work week. im taking a full week of next week though because i just cant handle. i am really struggling. i feel like a wreck and i dont know what to do or how im going to pay my bills. i really need reassurance on this. im so scared im going to get denied and get evicted or have to move back in with my parents or something like that.

I applied while working at my last job in 2010. I got approved like feb 2011. Did you use a lawyer? If not, that could be why.
If you live in the US, look up myler disability. That's who did mine. They took care of everything and I got approved with like 2 hospital visits and 3 doctors appointments on the issue. I had just started going to pdocs when I got approved. To me, it's basically free. They take a portion of your backpay. But in my head, I would have had that money without them anyways, so it's basically free. They don't charge you anything if you don't win. They stayed on top of everything. I got denied twice and they would have already appealed it before I even knew I was denied. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I got it In 4 months on the first try. Since u are under the age of 22 they won't count your work history I think.

I applied online and was approved in three months. All your mental health documentation is a GOOD thing...they can't fully assess you without it. I had a lot of mental health docs, too (pdoc, therapy, hospitalizations) - I was surprised how quickly I was approved. They called me and asked for my banking info so they could immediately deposit benefits. Good luck. xo

thank you all for the replies. im really hopeful now considering all of your guys' experiences. i just dont know how im going to make it until i get disability...i guess since i have a psychotic disorder im more likely to get it. since i posted this in the psychosis forum im sure thats the reason you all got it. i imagine if you just had depression it would take more tries. im hopeful. thank you all

I was 18 when I applied. It took like 6 months but I put my mom as the financial administrator so it was more likely that they would accept.

Yup. I have to have a representative payee, even though I didn't ask for one or knew about them until I got approved. Right now, my best friend is my RP. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It's much easier with a lawyer. Even if you had 20 years of solid proof, it would still help so much to get a lawyer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Almost 2 years ago I applied and was denied after a longish hospital stay. I was encouraged to appeal with a lawyer, which I did. My appeal is only just now coming up. Last December I returned to work because I simply had to. We could not meet our bills. I started part time, but I now work about 36hrs/wk.
I assume because I went back to work my appeal will automatically be denied? That would be okay I guess, but dredging up all this info about how sick I can be makes me really worry about it happening again. (ssdi not ssi, i think, confused - hope okay to put here) Last edited by Gr3tta; Jun 29, 2016 at 03:08 PM. Reason: Clarification |

I applied for SSDI back in February. Today I got a letter in the mail says I have to go to their psychologist for a mental exam. Has anyone else had to do this? What can I expect? It says it can take up to three hours.
