Hi everyone,
I've been having more and more trouble with remembering things, how to spell things, how to write things, I scramble up letters in words, I can't remember basic things like my address, my middle name, how to tie my shoes, etcetera. Sometimes, I'll say certain words that mean completely different things from what I'm trying to say, and I know how to say it, it just comes out wrong. I forget how to spell words and I spell them phonetically, like floor becomes flore, tried becomes tryed, etc. My psychiatrist recently upped my dosage of Zyprexa, but this started before any of my medication was increased. I'm 20 years old and my symptoms have drastically, exponentially gotten worse since my last inpatient hospitalization last year. Is this just disorganized thought getting worse?

I've asked similar questions and from what I've gathered, this is pretty normal in people with psychotic disorders. It's true for me as well, and I feel like the spelling like you have described has gotten significantly worse/very much like you describe, since being on meds. I've always had a bad memory and whether that has gotten worse with age/illness or because of treatment is debatable. My memory has had a fairly steady steep decline since pre-teens, the spelling definitely got way worse with medication. I wonder if it is similar to my art ability and the lack of ability to picture things in my head. I still know the basics/principles of art, but I can't picture them in my head now that we've found antipsychotics that work for me, I can just replicate or mix attributes of physical works. I use to be able to create in my head, or see the end result without having to sketch/draft it. Now I have to see a physically real visual. I wonder if without meds the words would come together in my head, except now, I'm left more with the basics/rules of grammar and spelling and have to physically see it to process.

I'm in the same boat. 2 grams of sarcosine in a glass of water a day had greatly helped with it. You can get it the cheapest from powder city. (Online)

I'm the same way with art!! I went to art college and I was fine through, until I had a large psychotic episode at school, sent to see a psychiatrist, and then hospitalized.
After, I was on a lot of antipsychs, and I forgot how to draw internally basically. I know the basics, I know what was taught in class, but I have so much difficulty visualizing it without a reference. My head feels like its stuffed full of cotton and rocks, if that makes any kind of sense. Just some parts rattling around, sometimes I'm better at remembering, sometimes I'm not. Some days are better than others. I've been told I'm one of those "wears completely inappropriate clothing for certain weather" before. I'm in Texas currently, and I'll regularly go out in the 100+F weather wearing leather jackets and stuff. I don't actually remember ever doing that, just stuff I've heard people say.

The same happens to me but it was worse when I took a lot of antipsychotic.

It's strange, because I believe I've experienced something like this, too. I have such a terrible time remembering things, staying focused, and thinking. Sometimes it's so difficult to manifest thought or it's really difficult trying to organize my thoughts into coherency. Sometimes my mind draws a blank on the most simple of tasks.
Eating seafood has actually worked to clear up my thoughts a bit and make me think on a more straight path and remember things a lot easier. Apparently fish and seafood in general is good for your memory and thought process, oddly enough. At least, it worked for me. A friend recommended it to me. So, maybe it could help you if you ate a lot of it? Since I live on an island, I can go out downtown and buy lots of seafood and fish. So, when we have the money and time, I do that. Either way, I hope you feel better soon. Have a wonderful day! |
