So what books are everyone reading? Recommend something and give a brief reason why.

They could be books on schizophrenia or fiction. Id like to hear about what you guys read and pick up.

I just listened to the audiobook Wise Man's Fear. That's the second book in a 3 part trilogy. The last book hasn't been written. The first book in the series, titled The Name of the Wind, turned out to be one of my favorite books. Books with genius protagonists are the best i think. I love to read how their minds work. It's a charming fantasy novel about a coming of age genius who goes on adventure and learns the mysteries of magic and fighting to avenge his family. I love the love story involved. It's unlike any other i encountered. My friend Jill didn't like it though. She has opinions of the young woman. lol It's rather complex.

SP, i thought the tale with the kathar (spelling?) was interesting. The being who lives amongst the fairies who all is guarded from. Bast thinks they are the worst creature(s?). How it messes with one's fate. Makes me scratch my head how it can turn out.

Hopefully i didn't spoil anything. I tried to be vague.

I first read bios as bio's as in about people and history that created A+ but then i remembered flashing my own bios on my motherboards. **** that up and it's toast! Even worse, unlike toast, you can't scrap that up with a butter knife either.

For curious people, from Wiki:
Quote:
For IBM PC compatible computers, BIOS (/ˈbaɪ.ɒs/ BYOS, an acronym for Basic Input/Output System and also known as the System BIOS, ROM BIOS or PC BIOS) is non-volatile firmware used to perform hardware initialization during the booting process (power-on startup), and to provide runtime services for operating systems and programs.[

Yes I only flashed the bios once when my hard drive was failing and that was one of the troubleshooting tips------I was like hmmm lets try it and I was one of those people who had a second password on the bios just to make the computer as unsellable as possible if someone stole it. I feel like reading this book is like reading ancient history.....I know the modern version is uefi but its not like I've ever had to access it, apparently its more of a graphical interface than ye olde bios. Apparently you can get to it thought some troubleshooting menu without even having to jam on the F2 etc when booting up.

Speaking of toast I had to update the firmware in my camera once and the battery died halfway though the process-----toast-----so sad....

Right now I'm also giving Star Wars Revan a turn to read. Its a short book and reads very much like a teenager book. It's filled with imagery and not very much actual content and philosophy. I just don't get it. Star *****s has so much potential for philosophy yet they drag it through the mud with adolescent action. sigh. I really hope The Last Jedi turns up something new because Star Wars really hasn't been mind bending.

Star Wars Revan Takes place after the game, Knights of the Old Republic II. He was a character in the first KotoR game. I'm not sure if i will finish this book... Ill read it for another hour and decide then.

How do you like audible? Do you use it on your phone? Audiobooks seem so expensive... so i use bit torrent and steal them. Half the time i already have the book and just dont' have time away from work to read it so i listen to it at work. God i'm awful.

Irony: I downloaded so many ethics courses illegally from bit torrent that i got a warning from thegreatcourses.com to stop immediately. lol Heyoooo!

Windows phone has audible. I wish there was a monthly subscription fee to listen to as many books a month as you want. I'd buy that for sure if i could use it on my phone. As soon as monthly subscriptions for music started i stopped downloaded music illegally.

Out on Blue Six about from Amazon
Quote:
The Compassionate Society was designed as a utopia, where people’s genetic predispositions and aptitudes—rather than random choice—guide their lives, and pain of any kind is illegal. In the self-contained city, happiness is the most cherished value, and the Ministry of Pain swiftly prosecutes anyone who interferes with the contentment of another. For many of its citizens—who were matched to their jobs, spouses, and friends—the Compassionate Society is perfect. But to Courtney Hall, a political cartoonist, it is a place of stifling mediocrity. When her satirical work makes her a target of the government, Courtney goes on the run, only to discover an entire underground network of dissidents, each fighting against the stagnation imposed by the Compassionate Society—a struggle that could stand as humanity’s last chance for growth, innovation, and ultimately, survival.
Reminds me of A Brave New World a bit. I love dystopians. Wow, Neal Stephenson gave it a review. That's cool. He's one of my favorite authors.

Best book I have ever read Geothe's Faust. This is the best translation I've found
Books ARGH Us!
Quote:
Goethe’s two-part dramatic work, Faust, based on a traditional theme, and finally completed in 1831, is an exploration of that restless intellectual and emotional urge which found its fullest expression in the European Romantic movement, to which Goethe was an early and major contributor. Part I of the work outlines a pact Faust makes with the devil, Mephistopheles, and encompasses the tragedy of Gretchen, whom Faust seduces. Part II, developed over a long period of Goethe’s later life, reflects Goethe’s own transition from a predominantly Romantic to a wider world-view and explores more extensive themes, including the values of the Classical past, as it moves towards the work’s resolution.

The protagonist, Faust, is presented in a complex manner, and Goethe’s treatment of the subject matter raises ethical and spiritual issues, many of which are not resolved within the drama itself. Goethe’s stress is on Faust’s striving towards the good, and on the nature of human error, rather than on the traditional Christian view of sin and redemption, and the play’s opening sections and its conclusion can be seen as humanist allegory or metaphor rather than an expression of orthodox religious belief. It is left to the reader to draw their own conclusion about Faust’s everyman character, and the extent to which he earns his ultimate spiritual salvation.
Thanks for this!

That's how I first felt about Wise Men's Fear. That's how I feel about a lot of media actually. The first Matrix was the best. Ender's game was the best, Part 1 of Faust was the best, but there are so many exceptions. I thought Harry Potter just kept on getting better and better. It got so dark towards the end. I loved it.

On the shortness of human life, Protagoras is to have written, "Concerning the gods, I have no means of knowing whether they exist or not, nor of what sort they may be, because of the obscurity of the subject, and the brevity of human life."
