I am starting to come off pimozide and seroquel. My psychiatrist was a bit shocked at my doctor's decision but she agreed that it was time. Dealing with the headaches and side effects of weaning off will be okay for me I think as I am pretty strong willed. However, I am worried that voices, delusions and hallucinations will come back. I have managed to tackle delusions pretty well now I think but voices could come back. I keep worrying that it is too early but then again, I am so excited at the prospect of not being schizophrenic anymore. Well not suffering from the effects anyway. Being well 'healthy' after so long of dealing with this.
There wasn't much point to this post really, I just thought I wanted to somehow confirm that I am getting better ![]() |

Has your psychiatrist talked to you about the non-medication based things you can do to help yourself like learning to recognize your triggers and being educated about your illness in general?
Do you know where to go to get help if you need it? I wish you the best of luck and we are here for you if you need help!

I don't understand. Who told you to stop your meds? Schizophrenia doesn't go away. Please get a few more professional opinions. Boz

Oh no, I understand that it doesn't go away. I still am a schizophrenic. BUT, one doctor has said that right now, I am stable enough to come off meds. The reason I want to come off is because of side-effects etc.
BUT, I am worried that when I come off meds, voices etc. will come back full force. |

bmoz: Schizophrenia doesn't go away. As a matter of fact, it does. It was once widely acknowledged that 1/3 would make a complete recovery, 1/3 would make a partial recovery, and 1/3 would not recover. Feel free to review this post if you're looking for more insight in that regard: Schizophrenia & Hope hellishlygood: The reason I want to come off is because of side-effects etc. BUT, I am worried that when I come off meds, voices etc. will come back full force. Hello hellishlygood. I'm assuming you're aware of the information in the resources topic as related to coming off meds -- if not, there is some good information there. Many people, of course, come off meds successfully. Some find the process to be easy, some find it to be difficult. I hope your own process is going smoothly.

Yeah. Schizophrenia DOES go away, and even if it doesn't, it's very important to let the patient know their delusions, hallucinations and what not will NOT last forever.
hellishlygood, hope you will report more on how things are progressing with you! Sometimes I'm also afraid psychosis will come back, but I've been worrying for a few months now and it hasn't returned.

I read that only 5% of schizophrenics (full symptoms for + 6 months) recovers... If you are doing so good why don't you stay on your meds then?
