Today was my first day and it was pretty good. I made some cash selling some books and then had in the morning to afternoon, a 3 hour lecture in forensic psychology. The professor is one that's amazing and that I've had in a previous course so I was not only looking forward to the subject but also to having him as a professor.
I then had 1st year sociology and the professor pulled a fast one, wanting us to buy a new book. He initially got the bookstore to order a different book but now a new version suddenly came up that doesn't use 15 year old data. The lecture wasn't exciting as it was mostly all administrative babble so hopefully the next lecture will be more exciting. The book is actually a good read and I have several friends who have taken it, one of which is doing some second and third year sociology courses and we tend to help each other out in our group. Tomorrow will be comparative anatomy, physiology and evolution of vertebrates (third-year bio. course), animal behavior (third-year bio. course) and clinical neuroscience (third-year psych. course). |

(warning: rant)
I had a mixed day. My first class was good and very interesting. My second class was also good, but I found out that what I thought was an assignment with a professor to do research is just for advising even though when they gave us the list they said that it was okay if we ended up switching to do research with someone else. (Hence implying we were signed up to do research with the first adviser.) So the one professor I wanted to work with in the program may not be taking any new students into his lab , (even though there are at least three master's students with research interests in his area). If he isn't taking new students, why the **** am I spending so much money to be here? If I can't get any experience working in my area of interest I might as well be back at my job making money instead of losing it. You think they would have figured this out before hand. But once again apparently that isn't important to this school. I came so I could get experience in my interests and it seems like I may not be able to (one of the barriers to getting into a PhD program). It's not like I don't have enough general research experience, I can get people to pay me to do that. AGH!!!!

My first day of high school (*shudders*) was for the most part not how I planned or wanted it to go. I was a nervous wreck, which I always am. I don't have any classes with my two closest friends, and I just felt this sort of hate in the air. So many people don't like other people, it just bothers me because I know a lot of them don't like me. But oh well, so it goes. My second day, which was today, was better - a watered down version of h*ll instead of the double shot I received yesterday. I hope tomorrow goes ok.

Googley- what are your options here? Have you gone to the department head and explained your situation, the reason you left your job in the 1st place? Transferring an option? A completely different professor, altogether? Just brainstorming for ya..
Indiesoul- Is there some high schol organization full of more supportive people you can join? I used to be afraid I 'felt hate in the air' but that could be something you are perceiving wrong?

I couldn't make my first day because I was sick! I was actually pretty bummed. I went to my school's dept today to find out what I missed and what the homework was. It took a lot out of me and I was tired after for a while. I'm a little perked up now though. So...next week will be my first day. And I'll be nervous and all the other kids will have already done their first day. I hope it goes ok!!!

I really like hearing about people's first days.
My first day isn't until next Wednesday--we start very late here. I spoke last week with an advisor in the psych department about whether I would ever be able to get into the class I am trying to. (This is the 4th quarter that I have had my eye on it, and it is always filled before it is my turn to register.) She was really knowledgeable and told me I would probably never get into this class. At least I know now to just quit trying. This course is a prerequisite for a couple of more advanced courses in the department that I would like to take, so it seems like a big barrier for me to not be able to take it. But the advisor told me that perhaps taking a related course from another department would be a sufficient prerequisite if I spoke with the professors of the advanced psych courses when it came time to take them. No guarantees, but it sounded hopeful. So she helped me find what might be a transferable course in another department. She was very helpful. (I wanted to ask her why the heck the department doesn't offer this course I need in a bigger room, or more sections, or do something to match student demand, but I refrained. )Grayness, those classes all sound really interesting. What will you be doing in the clinical neuroscience course? Does it have a component where you get to spend time in the clinic? Googley, can you speak directly with the professor you are interested in working with? Maybe if he knows how interested you are, he will let you in his group. Or maybe he will have a good alternative suggestion about someone to work with whose research interests overlap with his own.

I started high school on the 8th of September, and it was super nerve racking. I had a hard time finding my classes, and actually couldn't even find the gym. I was catching a cold so I didn't feel too well. But all in all, it actually wasn't that bad. The first few days weren't ideal when it came to finding classes, but by now I've gotten everything down pretty easily, found the fastest and best way to get to classes and all. I did discover though that my Language Arts class is far too easy for me, unfortunately. We had to fill out a sheet on "what we expected" in French class. Most everyone was pretty nice but I didn't talk to much anyone, since I didn't, and still don't, know anyone. My only complaint about my first day was that it was hectic and a bit boring, but it wasn't half bad.

My first day was Wednesday. I am taking statistics. The professor seems really good and the TA for my section is a nice guy too. I hope it will not be too much work. I like statistics so am looking forward to learning more in a formal way.
The class is located really far from where I work, though, so it is a loooooong walk to and from each day.

I started a school a while ago , but i'm having issues addapting. I moved from New England to Florida. I feel like i'm surrounded by a bunch of self-centered ignorant people. Um , but i have found a few people i actually enjoy being with , and i really like my classes. So , i have my ups and downs , but in the end i think it'll be worth it . I am 14 and a sophomore and i have just gotten out of my "depressed" mode , which i was in for a while , had therapy once a week and on prescripted anti-depressants. I hope everyone else's school situation is going splended . I am actually happy though .
Bye
