I'm currently enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program at my college and as a part of my Human Growth and Development class, we're learning about ADHD. Most of the students in the class, take it as a joke, laughing at the symptoms and saying that children who have this disorder must be retarded. Having ADHD, I do not find this funny one bit. I was actually quite offended and hurt.

Hi, eyescoloredgreen, welcome to PsychCentral (PC).

That sounds like a hard position to be in. What did the professor say? It's too bad your fellow students are so ignorant, maybe they're afraid as I think everyone has some incidents that are like ADHD symptoms and only 25% of adults with ADHD are diagnosed when they are children.

Maybe make it personal :-) raise your hand and when called on say, "I have been diagnosed with ADHD if anyone would like to know more about it, let me know. That should at least quiet the stupid comments within your hearing!

I don't know how your prof responded. I would like to have thought that I would have rebutted their comments, if I were still teaching that course. You might consider approaching your professor outside of class, providing the "facts" and hope that he/she will make some comments about their ignorance and correct them......

My younger son was just diagnosed with ADD several months ago, at age 17. I've been reading a lot on the subject--and it definitely has nothing to do with intelligence. In fact, he scored extremely high on an IQ test. His vocabulary score was off the chart--just got one-half of a point off the whole section. (Sorry--have to brag a bit!)

Let me know if I can help in any way--providing book titles or whatever!

EYES - You know that you are not retarded, but I know how painful words can be. The professor really should not allow that type of negative comments in class. I hope you realize that those students are displaying their own lack of compassion and intelligence.

That's very close-minded of your fellow classmates - sounds like they are the stupid ones. Perhaps you could talk to your professor about how you're feeling about it and ask him to call out people who are making rude comments (if he hasn't already). I'm sure he would understand!
