I know that it's procrastination but I don't understand why I can't just sit down and do my homework. I just finished 9th grade. I still make pretty decent grades, high B's and such. I even had a 100 in geometry. But I just can't bring myself to do my homework. Is it my environment? I live in a very small house with three brothers. My cousin lives with us on the weekends because I live with my mother, uncle and grandmother. There isn't really anywhere I can really go where it's quiet and I already have pretty bad ADD problems lol. Any tips or advice on how I can concentrate? I have a very important summers project. Without it I can't be in honors English for 10th grade. Any tips at all will be more than appreciated. Thank you!!

Any way you can make a little place out in the back yard or at a local park? Blankets and just the stuff you want to work on? Or you could try the library or a local restaurant if you have a laptop and are using internet. Otherwise I'd just work to get up early enough so you have an hour or so in the kitchen/living room undisturbed before people get up?

I'd figure out a way to think about the project whether you are working on it or not. I'm working on a project and HAD to get up at 4:30 yesterday morning to check some things out, my curiosity was just so great Really liking what you are working on helps a lot with both concentration and doing well/learning a lot.

I don't think I am the best one to help with this because I have the same problem but I'll try...

I just finished up Junior year and I never had these issues until this year. I even put off a project for my AP english class until the night before it was due...needless to say it was a long night. I always got everything done, but sometimes I found that making myself pressured to finish, or multitasking (reading with the TV on, or doing math while messaging someone) helped me somewhat. I also worked more efficiently when a deadline was approaching. I tried giving myself deadlines and it semi-worked...sometimes it would, sometimes I would ignore it completely. Could you try that out?

Last summer I simply made a list of all my summer work (I had two AP classes so it was A LOT) and when I completed something I deleted it from the list. I felt super accomplished when I deleted something from the list.

I also tried doing as much work in school as I could. For example my math teacher always gave us the last 15 to 20 minutes to do homework and I always tried to finish my math there, because A. I wouldn't have to do it later, and B. I didn't have to bring home my book If you have a chance to do your work in school just sit down and do it (Music helps block out classmates).

One final thing I can tell you is try your best not to skip a homework assignment, because once you skip one it is hard to get back on track doing the homework every night (I have experience, math was generally half done, luckily he only checked to see if you did it so I could make it look like I'd done it).

Hope some of this helps!

I have the same problem, Jiys. I wish I knew what to do about it myself. Just offering you my support! HS

I can relate to this. I can't ever seem to focus on anything other than what holds my immediate interest. It can obviously make things like school very difficult, when even a class that you enjoy becomes uninteresting if something else occupies your attention. May be, ADD, maybe something else. Maybe the effects of the information age on humanity. Rapid information cycling has most definitely stunted my attention span. I don't really know what the cure is for this, or if there even is one. Maybe try calming exercises like meditation, find environments free from distraction such as libraries.
