I've always loved the medical field, I removed my own head stitches at 7, dissected owl pellets and have had a knack for the medical world from micro to deceased. However I have an artistic half of me that has always been into dance & music. My original goal was to be a M.E., considering I have no school near to train me in mortuary science; I thought I'd go for my R.N. But my local R.N. Waiting lists are equivalent to my MD which is closer, so one is far less incone than the other however I'm equally as passionate about both. I tried a minor in dance and major in med but at this point it's one or the other...no idea what to do.

At most universities you can do a major and a minor. Currently I'm doing 2 majors and 1 minor, and I have a strong interest in the medical field as well. If it's an issue of too much work though, then I'd say pursue the major because it's more useful, you have a strong passion in it and later on, you can re-visit the interest in dance and music, or simply have it on the side as a hobby.

Economic reality should be the determining factor not just your "passion" which can very quickly disappear when you discover that it's extremely difficult to find any decent jobs in "music and dance" while the medical profession, especially for nurses, has an alarming shortage of employees.

my vote is for something that you find interesting & stimulating. yea there may be better $$ & jobs in one field but if it bores you to death then what a miserable life you will lead.

my major was in 1 field. my occupation was in a totally unrelated one. netiher made me wealthy. i enjoyed them both. the thought of picking a major for the sole reason there are jobs & $$ would suck the life & passion out of it for me.

do what your heart & soul call you to..if you can swing both go for it...what about music therapy?...that is a good field as well.

either way...a lifetime is too short to be working just for the $$ & no joy.

Funny fact: They limit the amount of nurses that go through a school per year. (Something like 50-100 every graduating class) My friend told me they do this on purpose to keep a demand in the occupation!

You do not have to do everything at once, you can do things in sequence. The MD route is a very long, intense one; if it is an interest I would work on it, see where one gets. Then maybe you can afford to sponsor your own dance academy :-)

At this point I'm seriously contemplating the dance factor; it's not that I'm any less passionate about medicine it's that economically speaking at this point I think I'd have a better chance of landing my feet at a high a dance studio, then landing and completing a residency before I'm 30, I'm 26 and ready to give up on a plan for a dream; thank you all for the guidance & advice. I feel giving up on pre-med/med and helping kids create art through their body is a different kind of impact, but one I'm willing to try. thank you.

At 26 it's definitely not too late for med school. There are people in my class who are in their late 20s and 30s. If it's your dream, go with it. I love med school, it's amazing.

What if you have know idea what to do? I'm depressed all the time I'm fairly good at everything, it can take me about 5 hours to perfect something (If i try) but sadly i don't really know what to do... and talking to career counselor is complicated. if i wanted their advise I'd go to an elementary school where five year old's could tell me the same thing "I can be what ever i want..." right because that's just so damn easy. so this is my problem i also have a learning disability and..... yeah know.

I got diagnosed 3/2011. I am a self-taught makeup artist and hair stylist that went into it because I love what I do and get paid pretty well. You can make money doing what you love. Don't look into doing anything for the money. I am now pursuing medicine. I am planning on applying this year and I'm 37 with 2 boys that are 10 and 17. So if you do the math, I started way early. I always loved medicine but after high school I was all over the place. I went to major fashion design because I was getting too much pressure from my family to do medicine even though I did like it and by accident I found I had a talent for makeup and hair. It's never too late to do anything. You can do it all! Just focus on one thing at a time. I know it's hard to determine what is the "right" thing to do, but what ever you decide is the right thing to do at that time. Every body has a journey and you need to start somewhere. I have my ups and downs and I'm currently in sort of a yucky place because I'm stressed studying for MCATs and I missed working out over the weekend and I drank at a party. And of course on top of all that I'm eating unhealthy. All that combined is not effecting me very well. I realize this and I just need to fix it. If I don't exercise regularly I eat bad and then the downward spiral.

You won't know until you try something out. Just go for it.

I would go for med....but then, I'm biased.
