So here is the situation...
First quarter ended, so I would still get a little credit if I dropped the class. My only C was in Calculus... haha... it is preventing my GPA from being almost perfect. I don't like the teacher. I will probably like the extra free time esp. next semester. And my major probably won't require it....

On the other hand though... I am not failing the class, I could survive the class... The teacher also teaches at the community college, so I might get stuck in his class again, which would be awkward... I may/will need to know Calculus for my newly found hobby of programming... The girl I like is in the class, and it offers an opportunity to speak to her on rare occasions... I also have bad premonitions about dropping the class, that in the future I will regret not taking calculus because my lack of knowledge will lead to people's deaths, and my premonitions have a tendency to be scarily accurate...

Also, either way, I get an advanced diploma at the end of the year. I understand the subject's theory, I just am having problems mostly with the application of the stuff. Meaning, I can't seem to get the correct answer, even though I do the math the way the book says. So I really am not sure which path to pick...

Opinions?

It is really up to you. I did my degree in university in psychology. I never took calculus, and I was okay ultimately. But it depends on what you want to do afterwards.

Can you see a guidance counsellor or academic advisor about this? They'd probably be able to give you better advice.

To be honest, the guidance counselor and I hate each other openly....

I've dropped classes and, each time, I've regretted it even though with one or two I had no choice because I couldn't possibly bring my grade up at that point. But, if you're doing alright in the class, I'd stick with it.

You could try Khan Academy, that might be able to help. There are a ton of calculus videos.

Are you in college? You could audit and retake it later?

I'm in high school, and I dropped calculus today. It felt good.

In that case, I guess I don't need to vote! Hope it turns out well for you.

i'm glad you dropped it. I was a computer programmer for 30 years, and never needed to figure out the area under a curve. I do, however, remember the nightmares - big, huge blackboards filled with integrals, with a big division sign thru them!

In my first degree, I briefly did a stats/math minor, so I had to take more than one course in calculus. Right now though, I'm studying in computer science for my 2nd degree and calculus is also required, although I'm not entirely sure how it applies to programming. Anyway, if you do decide to take the community college course in calculus, then maybe you'll remember some of the content, making it a bit easier in part of the course.

Calculus was a bear for me! I think that finding the right professor is key to getting the concepts and being able to apply the rules accurately. I turned out dropping the course, when I found out that my professor (who I finally clicked with in calculus) would be leaving before the end of the semester & someone else would be taking over. Waay too scary for me!! Turns out that I didn't need calculus thankfully. hew:

Calculus is a requirement for many different majors ~ I'd recommend that you re-think your decision to take the course in college. Not a fun class IMHO, but it does give you a lot more options in the scientific field! Best wishes to you.

You've already made your decision and all, but I have found that it is sometimes the teacher of the class that gives you issues. Back when I took Algebra 1 loooong ago, I had a really bad teacher and got a c. Retook the class with a different teacher the next semester and Got an A+. Don't sweat dropping it and enjoy your school life!
