Thought I'd start a thread for anyone running out of nails to chew off waiting for acceptance into grad school or undergrad, and also if you didn't get in, or did, how are you feeling- have you come up with a plan?

So I'll start...

I just applied to grad school, and don't know if I was being too cocky applying to the doctorate before the masters, but the doctoral program has the psychology concentration I want. I'm trying really hard not to go online and compare myself to other people who applied for the same school/program (because you can find forums everywhere with peeps asking if their application was good enough). My back up plan is working at a community mental health facility, or volunteering at a hospital, preferably a prison.

So, do these nerves or successes apply to anyone?

Take care,
-obj

Good luck with it obj! I know how nerve wracking it can be waiting!

I have actually just received acceptance for my postgrad psychology but it was a very stressful few weeks before I received the email! I did have a back up plan though of different employment (would look at full-time in the field instead of part-time) and had been attending interviews but didn't need that.

Good luck again!! Thinking of you Do you know when you should hear back? Please let me know how it goes

dang so even after one has proven themselves with a doctorate the "acceptance" ventures don't stop huh? lol bring it on I suppose

I won't hear anything until march I think, but not sure. I know that interviews are in march, but don't know how soon they tell people before hand. I'm waking up at night now with nightmares about my personal statement saying all the wrong things and failing to mention things...it was the best I could do, I turned it in feeling great about it, but paranoia is setting in for sure lol

On top of all that, my girlfriend and I just received a 30 day notice to move out of the house we were renting...apparently the house our landlord was living in is now being auctioned off..long story, but now I'm faced to find an apartment not knowing how long the lease should be. Right now we've decided on this 7 month lease, and me moving to the 4 hour away campus first while my gf finishes the lease, should I get accepted. So I would be going alone lol. It's do able, but stressful as my finances are less then $200 altogether right now.

I'm sure it will all work out though, thanks for replying! I really needed a vent I guess

Take care,
-obj

The doctorate and masters degrees do different sorts of things:

http://www.gradschools.com/article-d...ters-or-phd-89

I've known lots of people who got a PhD instead of a masters, it depends on your personal needs. I think if you did well in your undergraduate studies that you have a good shot; I wouldn't worry about your personal statement that much, if it came from your heart it is what you want, but hope you have good references/recommendations, too :-)

Yes, do keep us informed how you do. I know of a lot of masters degree programs that are pretty much "automatic" acceptance (the one I was in), they are happy to get what money they can and let the program keep/lose you as it falls out as you go along, since a doctorate is mostly research/writing thesis and lots of people never quite finish because they can't get done with that part, I don't see why they would not let you "try." I'd assume I would get in and start figuring out what I want to learn/research/write about, etc. so I can hit the ground running.

With all the online options and changes in the educational world in the last 12-30 years, I think anyone reasonably qualified can get in almost any program, it's staying there that is more difficult. One has to be a lot more of a self-starter these days I think, more savvy what's what.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
