We just finished reading The Odyssey in English. I enjoyed it. Now we have a project to do and I'm all strung out!
So, my teacher had me pick out a mythological beast of my choice from some slips of paper. I chose Mothman. If I had known what the assignment entailed I would have chosen something easier to write about. She wants us to create a children's book detailing yet another encounter that Odysseus makes on his way home.
At first, I was excited. Now, I'm just exhausted.
Mothman, if you didn't know, was a creature spotted during the 60's that people took as a warning of some sort. The Silver Bridge collapsed once the sightings peaked. So, the general agreement is that Mothman is a soothsayer of sorts; however, anyone who has ever read the Odyssey (abridged or not) will know that Odysseus was warned about many of the creatures beforehand.
I've set it after he leaves Calypso's island, Ogygia. The story is done. I just need to draw the pictures. Sigh. I'm just tired, I guess. Overworked.
My main problem was having the monster, well, not be a monster. The teacher wanted for us to make the monster not overwhelmingly terrifying (I secretly think that's ********, pardon my French.) I could handle that. Mothman doesn't do anything terrifying except make any person who sees him mentally unstable. Odysseus isn't though, because he's the epic hero.
She also has set a rule against plainly killing off the monster. I can deal with that.
I'm used to writing for adults, though. It took my two days to write a children's book that should have taken me half an hour.
Oh well. It's all over now. They've made a deal and I'm done with that whole mess.
Now, all that's left is drawing. Shudder.

That project does sound like a "frustratingly frustrating" one! Alas, I am not an expert on all that. I just suggest to take it a little at a time--maybe sketch out an outline for a plot.
Thanks for this!

If you're like me, get ready for a painstaking process of slow and seemingly long period of research and uncertainty. If can give a word of advise, try and focus on one thing at a time, I find that large and or complex projects usually overwhelm me when I think of the bulk work.

Sounds like you have really Done the work---play with the drawing, don't worry too much over it---and, writing for children can really be much more difficult than it would seem at first glance. I say kudos to you.
Thanks for this!
