I'm majoring in music at a music school. I am a freshman and have been struggling to make friends and I have C's in two classes. I'm worried that I'm not good enough at music to be successful and I know that it isn't an easy career path. I got into a top music program so I know I just be kind of good, but I don't have the motivation to really study and practice. If I decide to leave music, I have to change schools entirely. I don't know if it's music I'm not sure about or if I'm just struggling with school academically and socially. Being depressed in high school, music was all I was ever good at and now I don't know what to do! I'm so young but this seems like a big deal because my school and program are so specific (

Is there a guidance counselor on campus that you could talk to about this? You also might want to see a therapist to help you get over your depression. Glad you found PC. Post when you wish or start your on thread. That is the best way to get to know everyone and get support and help.

I'm sorry you're struggling I can understand how you feel pigeon-holed into pursing music. My sister applied to engineering schools since she's a girl and a lot of engineering programs look to keep their gender ratios equal... and there are generally less females in the sciences. But she really struggles with her classes because while she could manage science classes in high school, I don't think she's truly interested in the subject matter nor is she inherently good at it. She has to work really hard to pass her classes. I know that a semester or two ago, she took a class that was really hard for her and she was ecstatic that she got a C because she knew she worked really hard, tried her best, and managed to pass the difficult class. Do you enjoy music? Or are you doing it for the prestige?

As for me, I'm majoring in English because it's the only thing I'm good at. I don't love my major. I find it hard to motivate myself to read and study since I'm not passionate about the subject matter. And I also don't know what I want to do with my English degree. I know I don't want to teach. And I don't know too much about other career options. At this point, I'm focused on getting through college and getting the damn diploma!

I don't know where you stand on your attitude towards music... if it's something you want to pursue because you love it or if it's something you kind of got sucked into doing. But I feel like it's definitely hard when it's difficult to switch majors... since you'd have to change your school. That's a big decision and I agree w/ Gayle that maybe talking to an on-campus guidance counselor, who probably has experience working with students with similar concerns, may be beneficial.

Sorry for rambling :/ I guess I was just trying to express that you're not alone in your struggles and concerns.

I agree with gayleggg. The best thing would be to see a career counselor and explore your options.

I was also a music major for my first 2 years of college. After a while, I realized that it was "ruining" music for me. I want to enjoy music as a hobby, not a career path. I changed my major to English and I'm still minoring in music. It's been much better since I switched.

Did you know music is one of the hardest majors? Actually, music majors who apply to medical school have a much better chance of getting in than other majors because as musicians, we place high importance on things like focus, attention, detail, practice, and hard work.
