Im not sure exactly what I want to major in college.
I started college in 2011, right out of high school, stayed for a year, the latter half was disastrous because of my anxiety and depression and self-loathing and PTSD. SO I took a year off and worked nearly that entire year at Wal-mart ![]() As of late, I'm pretty sure that I want to major in Psychology and get a masters in Counselling. The only problem with that is that I feel rather odd and/or crazy because I'm in the midst of therapy right now. Im an emotional mess most of the time but I really feel like counselling is my calling. Im thinking about talking to my T about it and see what she says... I don't know though. Im so conflicted. ![]() |

Continue taking those general education requirements -- they can really help to give you an idea of what you like, what you're good at, where your interests lay.
In the meantime, taking an upper level psychology course -- see how you like it. During the summer, do an internship or volunteer in your chosen field of study. Not only will it look good on your resume & job applications, you will have experience and give you an idea of what to expect in counseling and if you want to go that route in your educational endeavors. Good luck to you ![]() |

I second what Arethusa said.
Some of my best T's have had their own problems with depression and mental illness, it made them better, in my opinion. Good luck and good job getting such a good GPA! |

If you're going to be a counsellor, I'd get a PHD and become a Counselling Psychologist, if you want to make a good living. Best of luck!!

Do not worry about a major yet. (And remember that all the profs will be pushing for you to choose them because they need a certain number in their class or they don't work and don't get paid.) I personally earned bachelor and master in education and THEN switched to a PhD in Counseling!
If your goal is to be a licensed psychologist remember that (now) you must be 5 years free of mental defect... YES YES YES talk to your T about this now, and ongoing. It is very common for those who have unmet questions about their own problems to seek out educational programs to try and help others with the psychological issues. That's okay, but going into that career field while still unwell is not. It's very stressful, very heavy responsibility, often with weird hours. Also talk with T as you study because T might be taking you on a path for your own good and what you are "currently" learning might make you go off on another. T might also give you good advice as to when and how much you could do now, or how soon, regarding those courses! But yeah, work on your general education requirements...they are a good basis for learning how to succeed in college! ![]()

What do you mean free of mental defect? Hospitalization?
