I need some ideas to improve my concentration when reading, and ways to read and not be looking around and constantly not on topic.... really any ideas will work.

Make sure there are no distractions. After reading one page, write down what you think you read in your own words, then read it back to check. Take regular breaks. Good luck!

Try to get in some sort of habit/rhythm. I do my school work right with/after my morning coffee when I get up and keep after it as long as I can. I have my non-fiction on the computer e-reader and my fiction on my Nook by the side of my bed for a treat before I go to sleep, but having an "area" where I work/read and that's all (not where I watch TV or do anything else) means when my behind is in that seat that's pretty much what I work on.

I have to write papers so I mostly read to help me write the papers and kind of do both at once; that way I can get an idea while reading and go write notes or something and then come back and read some more, etc. I also make copies of my pages/reading and/or write notes in the book/on the paper as I go along, etc.

One thing I have found helps is reading out loud and then taking notes at the end of the page about what I read. It makes me focus more on the page if I have to read them out and then helps me to retain the knowledge if I write notes.

I use the gummy bear method. Which is essentially scattering gummy bears across the page and reading up to a section and then you get to eat the gummy. I agree with mazing though I take notes on every section and I've found it helpful to highlight and underline important sections to keep my focus on the page. Like Perna said, there are definitely better times during the day to do this. I tend to do work inbetween classes as I find it hard to focus in my apartment. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

It helps me to read with enthusiasm. It may be the most boring thing in the world, but if you're "mind voice" sounds enthusiastic while it's reading, then you'll want to pay more attention.
You can also add mental commentary to what you're reading. That really helps with comprehension for me.
Good luck!
