This semester has been an absolute nightmare so far. In the two and a half months I've been in school I've been sick half the time, in the hospital twice, which caused me to miss a crucial due date for an assignment and might cause me to fail the class, I just lost one of my best friends in high school to leukemia less than a week ago and I just found out that the one thing that I thought would be positive, a girl I liked, not only lied to my face about not wanting a relationship right now, but has started going out with a mutual friend of ours. I've just been apathetic toward everything this semester. The idea of failing a class doesn't create the same visceral fear the same it did a couple of years ago. I used to be a major overachiever in classes until I burned out a couple of semesters ago. I even made the dean's list last semester. I don't know what's wrong with me, before I could do a weeks worth of homework in a couple of hours but now I can't bring myself to read a little over 20 pages at a time.

Hi, Tprice, and welcome! I wouldn't be the least surprised to hear that you are dealing with depression. I suggest you go to see the counselor on campus and get someone to talk to.

I hope things will get better soon.

Sorry to hear you are struggling so much this semester. Can you talk to your teachers about special consideration? It may give you extra time and allowances etc. for assignments and exams.

Oh my goodness, I know exactly how you feel! I had to miss a lot of school because I had a mental breakdown and had to go to the psych hospital...for the fourth time. It's funny, I left because I was overwhelmed, but when I came back, I was so overwhelmed with make up work and everything that I was throwing up during class from all the stress and anxiety.
What I found that I had to do is cut back on about 3/4 of my activities. And I even had to quit my job that I loved so much. But I have a lot more energy. Is there anything you can cut back on?
Never forget that you are more important than your education, my dear.

Thank you for your responses. I don't believe I'm dealing with depression. Although you could definitely define the mood I was in at the time when I wrote this as depressed I was still mourning the loss of my friend at the time and am doing somewhat better now. As for teachers giving me special consideration that's part of the problem. I asked for an extension on a project for one class when I was in the middle of a crohns flareup and my professor refused to give me one, resulting in one of the worst grades I've ever gotten. Thankfully there is a second half to the project which, assuming I did it correctly, will be much better. Also I can't really cut much of anything because I've already cut a lot over the years. My freshman year I was a member of around 18 different student groups and now I'm down to three that I go to regularly, so there isn't much more I can cut.

I can definitely relate. Hold in there, just a couple more months until the semester ends, right? I cannot wait either. Junior year has been so stressful. Talk to your teachers, you don't have to go into detail but express that there is a lot on your plate at the moment. Be respectful and receptive to other options, and if you need to, go to your school's administrator or counsellor.

Hoping we can both pass this semester and create a clearer path for the following year.
