I have to dorm next year since the closest college for my degree is an hour in a half away. Would someone with my MI be able to have a dormmate or should I get a single room? Since I'm on the schizophrenic spectrum I usually have hallucinations daily so idk how that would go with a random person. I'm not dangerous or anything, but they might be weirded out by me or it could be totally fine. I usually need to have a fan on at night so the voices don't bother me.
Also, has anyone on here with bipolar or schizophrenia been able to dorm and finish their degree? If so, what was your experience like?

When I was in college I would have been much better off in a single room, that's all I can say.

I didn't have a similar experience, but from what you write I think that a single room would be better for you. Could you talk about it with people who give you the rooms?

I plan on talking to the therapist and psychiatrist on the campus on what I should do because they would probably know best.

Single rooms were not an option at the college I went to first time, but would have been the better option with my BP if I could have lived by myself in the dorm. As soon as I could I get into a situation that I could live by myself, things went much better for me after that with my studies and over all well being when that happened. A single room in a dorm would have been the best of both worlds, being on campus for easy access to everything, getting to meet the others that live there too to socialize and to participate in events, and as well as having some privacy for my issues would have been ideal to start out. This is the option I would have taken and much less stress.
I hope you find what works best for you and good luck with school! ![]()

I'm still going to talk to the therapist and psychiatrist on campus about it first though.

Honestly, I've lived with others and I've lived by myself and living by myself is the best thing that ever happened to me. You like the fan on. If you live by yourself you can have the fan on whenever you need. If you live with others you will in fact have to compromise on things... And you will probably end up living with someone who continually pushes you to compromise on things that you 'need' for things that they 'prefer' because... Most people are like this. Especially when they are young and boisterous...
Like Fresia said, living in a single room on campus is a *wonderful* option precisely because you can lock your door for privacy when you desire it, but there is a whole campus full of people just outside for when you desire that. |
