I have been diagnosed with attention problems. It is weird but I enjoy learning but I hate school namely because of teachers/professors. I find most of them to be bullies and not helpful.
I do not want extra time on a test or extra time to do a task but I really resented one of my past professors. I was in a PhD program and I was very enthusiastic about it. Initially, I put in a lot effort but as my supervisor got increasingly belligerent and hostile towards me, my motivation waned. I still did work but not nearly as much as I used to. I told my supervisor that I was diagnosed with attention problems and I never asked for special treatment. Instead, he singled me out and tried to discourage me. He succeeded and I could not finish. I certainly tapered off during the end of my tenure but my supervisor was a big jerk towards me too. Do you guys find that your performance, motivation, etc. are influenced by the way your supervisor/professor acts? For those with ADHD, do you have trouble working with hostile supervisors/professors? |

Yes of course. Constructive criticism, OK, but some academics are incredibly immature. they need a dose of the real world form time to time, IMHO.

I do not have a problem with constructive criticism. In fact, it can be very useful. I do have a problem with belligerent criticism which is carping and contradicting.
I get thrown for a loop when I have to work with certain people and I am still trying to figure out how to deal with these type of situations. |

I am sorry to hear about your attention problems. I do not have that, so perhaps I cannot relate to you completely, but just in general, I find that blaming others for our own faults doesn't help us discover what our full potential really is.

I have had a couple of professors who were horrible bullies. I no longer take classes at that college, and am taking credit courses somewhere else now. It has worked to switch schools.
Also, it is an unfortunate fact that professors can have biases for and against certain students. One of my professors seemed to hate older students, but she would give the younger students a lot more help and support. The bias was so obvious that everyone talked about it. Some professors would try to discourage students from their chosen career path, saying things like "you aren't cut out for this". Often this assessment was based on meeting the student only one time. The more competitive that the academic field was, the worse it became. Many students graduated and did well in their chosen profession in spite of their professors telling them they would never make it in that field. |

Quote:
Constructive criticism should be objective only, not coming from a place of personal bias against a person. |
