So I took the math test today. Maybe I was still a bit shaken from my dream last night, plus some writing I did based on the dream, but I found it difficult to concentrate (ever since I was a kid I've had issues concentrating). I'm way behind in math, and I'm going to have to start from scratch once again (previous time might have had some degree of an influence on my current state) because I am Faily McFailure and can't do anything math-related. Other kids in my class don't have these issues, so why do I? And it doesn't help that there's a lot of pressure for me to get through this because math ends pretty early. *Sighs* Where's Hermione's Time Turner when you need it?
I just hate this. All of this. I met up with someone not in my class but studying the same subject that says she feels the same way, which was reassuring, but still, I just hate this. And my OCD/anxiety is getting in the way again, which doesn't help and...I just hate every minute of this and think that math is the ninth circle of Dante's Inferno that he didn't want to talk about. (In case you're wondering what the eighth is, it's my P.E. class) |

Maths has caused me a lot of grief - unclear why, my father was an excellent mathematician.
My mother paid for some private tuition from a most entertaining Pakistani gentleman who swore until the air was blue, but I passed my basic maths without which I would have been utterly undone. |

Never think of yourself as a failure ladyrevan21, you just haven't realised how much of a winner you are, yet.
![]() Hope that helps, take care and don't give up, I know you can do it and you know it too, you just gotta believe in yourself, work your butt off and become unstoppable in mathematics! ![]() |

I allways thought of myself as a failure because after 8 years of english at school I was barely able to speak it. But now I'm about to get an degree in Computer Science and learned english by reading papers. (It's still ****** but it's enough)
Thing is: Most people are good at some things and suck at other. School just don't let you explore your talents deeply and instead focuses on thing that don't come easy to you. Many things that you are unable to learn at school you may be able to learn with less pressure and a good mentor (if you want to. If not thats okay). School also doesn't show you all subjects that you might be good at. Find what interesst you. Find others that share your love. Don't think that math is more important than duno, knitting. It's just different. I know it's hard but at least this will give you some spare time in which you will think better of yourself. Good luck! |

Math was always hard for me as well. It's weird because my father originally went to school to be a mathematician! You have no idea how much that frustrated me, because I felt like I should have inherited some of those math genes.

Just wanted to say thank you, everyone, for your encouragement. I'm doing better now -- I'm taking a different class and got past the module that was giving me grief, but...well, I've run into a new module that's giving me grief. Hopefully I can complete it, take the post-test, and then I'll be good to go for Unit 3 next semester.
Lazarus16: Thank you so much. And yeah, you're right. Even celebrities have their imperfections. And I'm definitely going to be giving math everything I've got. And yeah, I guess I haven't really realized how much of a winner I am yet -- I definitely hope I can prove my...winner-ness. Omegalamed: Awwwww, thank you! You're really sweet. ![]() shattered sanity: There are. I remember taking stuff like Film and Lit (it's sort of this class where you analyze films and their source material. Nothing like The Hunger Games though; we had stuff like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Francis Ford Coppola's version of Dracula, The Last of the Mohicans, Apocalypse Now, etc. And we got to do a paper on books vs. movies -- I did Lord of the Rings -- and I also did a paper comparing Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula with Apocalypse Now.) and English Lit and being great at both. Maybe it was my teacher being pretty awesome. And I love books and movies -- I actually adore them. So I guess there are just some subjects that aren't my forte and math is one of them. (I know when I was in fourth grade, I despised math) Plfaumenkeks: That's awesome that you managed to learn English by reading papers! And yeah, you are definitely right. People are good at some things and not good at others. I guess what really kind of bums me out is that I need math to get my degree. (And this is just remedial math. I'm scared of what actual math will look like) But you're right, there's no reason math is more important than knitting. (Heck, my brother can crochet, which I think is awesome) 1976kitchenfloor: Awwww, thanks! I do my best. Writing and language has definitely been a big part of my life -- ever since I was a toddler, really. My mom has stories about how I learned to talk just by reading aloud, and writing my first story when I was little. I honestly do love writing, whether it's writing here, working on my fiction, things like that -- it's just...magic. Pretzelle: That really sucks. It's kind of like that for me too, except my mom's the math expert. (Also, we should start a club. The "We Hate Math" club) |

It would have been pretty interesting, I think, seeing how the books translate into the movies. My Film and Lit teacher actually made a nice statement about stuff like that -- how in a way, those two mediums are like two different works of art. Like comparing a painting to...well, I don't remember what her second item was, but I did like her comparison. Like these two mediums are different, and that's okay. I mostly picked LOTR for my project because it was familiar to me and I was so blown away first seeing the movies (I might have been thirteen or so because I didn't really watch PG-13 movies until I hit that age) that I wanted to be a filmmaker. So it was a bit of a passion project as well.
