Hey everyone!
I'm new here!

I was wondering if you have any self help book suggestions and if you could tell me how they've helped you?

My personal favourite is NOW by Sultan Ahmed, it's really helped me with confidence and given me the inspiration and strength to go after the things I want. You should read it and tell me what you think!
Thanks for this!

I like "Feeling Good" and "When Panic Attacks" by Dr David Burns. The books have a lot of helpful exercises. My Dr recommended him and I was a little put off at first because he does seem to discourage med use, but he doesn't seem to actually be suggesting that it's never necessary.

Hi there,

I connect better to academic books than new agey books. I've thrown out any books I owned that contained the words "the universe", "souls", "divine" etc. Don't get me wrong, I do own books about religion and God, but not "the universe". These books are usually alarmingly dismissive of trauma and its effects in the medical sense and tend to describe it is as "obstacles to be worked through" on our "spiritual path" or something to be meditated away or fixed with "faith." Not digging it, this is more annoying than useful to people who need concrete information, help, support.

My personal favorite is "Trauma and Recovery." Plenty of things that a patient can learn to help themselves while they may or may not be getting other help as well.
Thanks for this!

^I agree that "Feeling Good" has a lot of useful thorough information and self-help techniques. It's one of my favorites out of the many I've read.

If you're interested in Mindfulness (or Buddhism) "Radical Acceptance" by Tara Brach is a pretty good one as well. One of my previous therapists/life coaches introduced it to me.

I like the book "the 7habits if highly effective people" by Stephen Covey . Its supposed to be a leadership book for those in business, but it's helped me understand what it means to be self sufficient and 'be Proactive '

Feel the fear and do it anyway by Susan Jeffers.
I just started reading The depression cure by Stephen Ilardi. It's pretty good so far.
I'm in the middle of reading When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron.

I am reading Emotional First Aid by Guy Winch. It is very good, easy to read, talks about how we have physical first aid for body ailments but not emotion for things like loneliness, rejection, grief, loss, and many other common everyday things people can experience. He did a Ted Talk, which is how I found out about his actual book. He gives practical and helpful advice to remedy emotional wounds.
