Peanuts,
I totally agree with your post. I teach students with disabilities (LD/DD/ED, etc). You're exactly right that reading difficulties aren't always a result of a lack of reading in the home. I see I didn't include that in my post, so thanks for mentioning it I am trained in a specialized reading program, called Wilson Reading, that is very successful with many students with reading difficulties. It has made such a difference.

I think that it is important that society continue to support the public libraries and their programming. ditto for our public school districts. I feel that we as a society have a moral obligation to collectively reach out to all our children and offer supportive learning environments filled with enriching experiences. I see such public entites as an extension or an "in addition" to the support and warmth found within every child's home - not as a replacement of parental guidance but as an enriching addition.

This is exactly how I feel It's difficult seeing kids struggle with reading or any subject and not get the help they need.
Thanks!

Tut Dr. Clay! I thought you were for scientific proof as far as possible. How scientific is relying on surveys?

Uh oh. I get worried about things like this. Is a dog worse off because it doesn't have a "philosophy of life"? A cat? What would you think of one that proclaimed it did have "a philosophy of life"?

I was just about to say they do have a philosophy of life, and then I read the rest of the sentence. Okay, I still do think that dogs and cats have a philosophy of life. Not in the same way that people do, but in a way that makes sense for them. So what do you think of me? Morals, values and the like
