I'm considering speaking with a T on my college campus about my SI getting a bit out of hand, but I have a question first:
Can they disclose this information to anyone, or involuntarily admit me? I'm 18, so I'm considered an adult, but I don't know exactly how this stuff works. ![]()

where i am a college counselor can't admit you but they can call mental health or an ambulance if they think that you are at risk of suicide. If your not suicidal i'd tel the counselor that when you tell her about you self harm.

I'm not actively suicidal...just using bad coping skills.

You should be okay with telling the school counselor. I talked to a school counselor last year about cutting and it all stayed confidential. But if they think you could in-danger yourself or others they could call someone. Good luck

![]() Like suicidal danger, or worse cutting danger? The use of the term "danger" always confuses me...it could mean ANYTHING!

As far as I know they won't tell anyone else unless you have intention to end your life or to harm another person. For SI you should be ok disclosing. I hope you can talk to your counsellor

I think that talking about SI'ing is one thing. If they feel you are suicidal they can disclose it but as many have said - make sure that you state in the at the start of the conversation that you are not suicidal.
I once made the mistake of going to the hospital after I had cut - I needed stitches and they were able to hold me even after my therapist told them I was in no danger. They made me stay in ER for a few hours just to make sure I was calm and a psych came in to talk to me. I think it's great that you want to talk to someone about it and get additional help and resources. I hope it is someone that you feel you can trust and has shown you in the past that they care. This is a really courageous thing that you are doing. Please keep us posted on the how it goes... |
