I used to hurt myself...my family found out about and gave me a speech or whatever but they just figured that it was something that I was doing because my friends were also...but now, I think about it more and sometimes I wish they would have worried more and maybe even gotten help for me. has anybody else gone through a similar situation?

My mother was always clueless too. She found out about it through friends many years ago. She sent me to the hospital for a few days, and once I came back..She acted like everything was fine. Never paid attention to how I felt. So I know what you mean. But you say "used to"..I assume that means you haven't done it in awhile (which is good).

I've been down that road as well. My mom was clueless. But even after she found out through friends what was going on with me, she acted like it wasn't a big deal. You say you "used to" cut yourself. Sounds like you have since stopped (which is always good). If you're still feeling down about things, you could talk to your parents, and express your feelings and let them know it isn't because of your friends.

I can really relate to that. I started SI-ing when I had a mental breakdown when I was 12 or so... it was before I heard of a lot of people cutting themselves, so my parents' couldn't blame the "fad," or whatever. But my mom really freaked out, and took me to the doctor... and my DOCTOR, of all people, didn't take that (or my depression) seriously. But, if I had learned better ways to cope THEN, I wouldn't be in the mess I'm in NOW. If you feel like you need help, tell your parents or school counselor, or at the very least, a close friend/confidant that you're feeling depressed or anxious. Since you stopped cutting, don't start again to gain attention. The embarrassment and pain it brings is never worth it.

Yes, another adult told her and she only responded with denial and an awkward interrogation (where, why, etc)
