Age of those who self injure

Started at about 15 and am 20 now. I've only done it once the past year, relapsed after a full year.

started when in primary school, aged 7, continued to be a very big problem until I was 17, slowly but surely working my way through it, and now I am 23 I haven't done it in about 18 months even though the urges are still there. Having had the confidence and ability to make good friends since finishing therapy aged 19 means I have a good support network building up, something I hope carries on for the rest of my life.

I've used various forms of SI since I was 12. I'm 18 now.

I am 34. I started when I was young, can't remember exactly what age. I don't cut or anything, I just like to punch things in an attempt to break something. I have even punched a door over and over again to try and break my hand.

hm..started roughly 12..22 now.. razers+inserting needle under skin (did that only once or twice)

i started at 8 and i am 36 now. .i really feel really stupid about it..

I started about when I was in 6th grade. I'm now a sophomore in highschool. And I actually haven't hurt myself in...9 months? Yeah(:

I started very young, sortfo by accident, realizing that it actually made a difference. 38 now. Been doing it far too long

When I lived in California, I had been hospitalized many times & one of the ladies that lived in the same area as I did used to SI constantly....she was in her late 40's back in 1996......it wasn't anything she was about to stop doing even with all the therapy she had.....she had a lot of pain in her life from the beginning.

The sad thing I saw at the ranch where I boarded my horses was this little girl about 3....was there with her aunt who was trying to adopt her away from the abusive mother she had...the girl was walking along the horse stalls slapping herself in the face......I could just picture what she was going through at that age....just made me want to hold her & tell her it would all be ok & that no one should ever slap anyone......I also pictured what her future would hold if she was treating herself that way at the age of 3.

My gf has been doing this for a long time, possibly decades. She is 39 now.

i stared at 6 im now 14....i just like to i dont know why ive nearly killed myself doing it a few times..so i do it less but never stopped

im 36 started when i was 30 cuz i know i cant drink cuz im an alky so i started si to relieve pain like i did with booze ive been in psych wards before with si people & they have arms covered with cuts but more like scratches i dont do it unless i give in but when i do i leave deep cuts that take 4ever to heal my doc is gonna wonder this summer why im wearin long sleeves to appts yesterday when they took bpsr they did my rite arm & the first thought that went thru my head was i can do my left arm again cuz that where they usually take blprs & they always want me to flip my arm.stupid stupid well that was just a fluke they used right arm so my schemin mind is tryin to figure out the best place for "next time"

I started at age 17, I'll be 25 next month. It's been kind of an ebb and flow, though...gone through periods when it was sort of the "norm" in my life (ie: every day, or at least regularly,) and periods when it was sort of an occasional thing. And back and forth.

Started at the age of 16...I'm 28 now and sadly I can't seem to stop.

I've been doing it ever since I can remember and I'm 41 now.

I started at 21. I am now almost 30.

34 now...started when I was around 15.

My Dad's 39.

I'm 22 now. I started when I was 16. It's gotten worse as I've gotten older.

This post has really helped me. Thank you. I'm 23 and I've been hurting myself for 2 years now but I find that when I say it outloud to medical professionals, I get met with questions like I'm the only person to start at 21. I don't feel like an alien anymore.
