Yes, I cut when I hate life and all around me.
But, when things fall into place and I start to feel better and I get energy back I also get this destructive energy too and cut at those times too.
Does anyone do this?

I don't cut..but I "pick" incessantly at my hands...and they awful question you just raised is....
"When have I not felt like picking on myself?"

Yup. I have (had?) no idea what caused me to feel that way.

SJ, I just read on an SI website that feelings of: relief, in control and calm can cause SI...it doesn't state why though.

Just thought I'd share that.

I think that part of it can be when you're feeling good and you are not used to it, that can be unsettling. It's almost like you lose part of your identity, and don't know what to do with that, so you cope with it like you cope with other feelings.

I usually cut and have in the past when things weren't good... but I have also cut when things were 'supposedly' good but I knew deep down they weren't and cut, without having an 'obvious' reason to do so or feel this way. I can remember cutting more for any reason or no reason at all when I 1st started, but I don't really do this anymore now.. but to answer your question, yes, and I think it's more common than you'd think... as Rapunzel said, it becomes a way of coping with anything really, bad emotions, good emotions, feeling overwhelmed in a good or bad way.... Does anyone cut when they feel good?

<font color="purple">Yes, I have...... Sometimes the feeling good hurts just as much as the feeling bad...... SOmetimes the feeling good feels like I want to burst and S/I is a way for me to release that.... Sometimes the good feels kind of odd, scary or not real and S/I reassures me what I am feeling is real, b/c if I can feel the pain then its ok.....

I've always wondered the answer to this question. Thanks for bringing it up, it's nice to see we aren't alone in all of this.

Oh I know what you mean completely! That's exactly what I was trying to explain to a friend of mine recently. He's really great, he distracts me when I feel like cutting, which is a really lovely thing for him to do and I worship him for it...but yeah I get that and I just end up trying to turn this destructive energy into creative energy instead and sometimes it works. Try that?

I just recently returned to college, and was super excited about it. Walking around my campus, smiling, feeling the energy of being back...then it happened. Cut. Why would I think that, when I was so happy and feeling great? I wish there was more information on this aspect of self injury.

Yeah, doesn't seem like many people talk about cutting when things seem up and they do it due to a burst of energy.
But reading what people are saying it is more common then I thought.
Weird.

With so many of us around here, you're hardly likely to be on your own with something.
