My first time was when I was 8 and have been SIing off and on for 30 years (yup I'm a big ole 38!). I am wondering if there are any other adults on this forum who SI? I belong to another forum for SI but it is all younger people and sometimes I feel odd pouring my troubles on them.
Thank you!

Hi Cher,

Yes, a lot of us here are adults, whether we like it or not. I've been 29 for something like 7 years now (I lose track ... maybe intentionally). I was about six when I started, and it's been on and off too. Haven't done it for the past 2 months and 2 days now, and this time I'll make it for six months. I almost had six months last time. The next six-month mark coming up is going to be triggery though because I'm supposed to have a birthday around then, and also the one-year mark from being assaulted. Where do we get this compulsion to remember being hurt by getting hurt? Bullies were part of the problem when I started, um, 30? years ago.

Anyway, yeah, we have adults here.

Welcome to Psych Central Any adults who do this?

There are members of all ages here who SI, but it doesn't seem to matter about age. We all have something in common that we can share with one another and look to each other in support, and no-one need ever know your age. I have recently found out that i started SIing when i was 6- by picking the skin off my lips continually til they bleed (and I still do it all the time) and I am coverred in scars all over my body. But anyway, yes there are heaps of 'adults' here in this forum, and they are all a wonderful bunch of ppl, as are the younger ones. In fact, some of the 'younger' ones are so mature i can't believe their ages!!! Welcome. Any adults who do this?

Thank you all! I guess I just needed some reassurance. Sometimes I think to myself as long as I have done this you think by now I would understand why but I still don't know. I do appreciate the response to my thread. I look forward getting to know you all.

I'm 37 and have been SI'ing offf and on since I was 9 or 10. I'm currently stopped although I frequently still have the desire to.

I'm 44 and used to SI quite a bit. It showed me that I was alive and that I could feel things. I haven't done it in quite some time although tonight I came very close. Way too close.

Anyway, here's another adult for the group.

Yes, I am much older than you and I still struggle with SI. I have gotten so much better, but this week has been especially difficult and I have SI'd for the first time in many years. I think this time of year is a trigger for me. So, don't feel alone. Try some of the things on the post for things to do instead of SIing. Red marker, tooth brush, etc. I hope you stay strong, but if you slip, don't beat yourself up. That will just make it worse. Forgive yourself and go on. I'll watch for your posts, so let us know how you're doing with this.

Thank you sweatpea! Your absolutely right about not beating yourself up afterwards. I ended up having to cut before I could even get the courage to go to work yesterday. But thats how I view SI, that was yesterday and I leave it at that.

I'm an adult cutter. I've been doing it for the last 15 years and have no desire to stop. Unlike most people, I am very proud of my cutting and the scars I have.

I started self-injuring when I was in my early 30's. I also had a dissociative disorder. I've recovered from both now - I haven't SI'd since July 22, 1997, and have recovered from dissociative disorder since April 1998. While the dissociative disorder was a lifetime thing, the SI was more an adult-associated disorder.

You're not alone.

Skye

P.S. I'm 41 now.
