I started self harming when I was 13, I'm 41 now. I started taking Naltrexone on April 13 because my psychiatrist had luck getting his patients to stop self harming while on it. I'm curious if anyone else has used naltrexone? I haven't self-harmed since April 8th. Four months clean as of tomorrow.

I used to be on it for SI, and it helped a lot. I came off it because h and i were trying to get pregnant. Since coming off, I have started SIing again. I've thought about talking to my pdoc about starting it again.

Glad it's working for you - it's also been used to treat problem gambler's. I was on it on a higher dose than I am now, to treat alcohol cravings and I noticed it did lessen my desire to self harm. I'm on a lower dose of it now to treat opiate addiction, and it doesn't seem to be affecting my desire to self harm.
One caution though if your Dr. hasn't already discussed this with you is it's important to carry a card or something on you saying that you're on it, in case you're in an accident, because it blocks the effects of opiates working. That mean that any opiate based pain killer won't work. splitimage |

I actually started wearing a medical alert bracelet because I was having some intense anxiety over the being in an accident and being semiconcience or intubated and them not knowing I was on naltrexone and the docs trying to manage my pain with opiods. Having the alert bracelet allowed me to be on the med with less anxiety. Although I am still anxious about what will happen if I'm in an accident and I need some serious pain medication.
