...I've managed to go 53 days now without pulling my hair (I did snap off an end of one on Friday, but it was so small I'm not sure if it "counts")...

...but...

...I've been noticing that I've been picking at the skin on my face more and more recently. I did that before I stopped pulling, but I only ever did it when I was in front of a mirror and could see the dry skin/scab. Now I'm doing it when I'm not in front of a mirror as well, and it's left quite a few red marks - I don't know how long it's going to take for them to go away. I've been peeling the skin from my lips as well, and I realised today that I'm doing it at times when I'd normally have been pulling my hair.

What's the point in quitting if I'm just going to replace it with something else? Guess I'm not doing as well as I thought...

That is a familiar problem. If I stop cutting, I tend to do something else. It could even be something worse. That's because they are all ways of dealing with the same thing, but none of them really solve the problem because they all allow you to escape from your feelings rather than deal with them.

remember.. it is a process of changing. you are trying to cope. dont get discouraged. Just notice it and try to figure out why you might be feeling overwhelmed.

The trick is replacing those negative coping skills with positive ones. Trust me, I know... easier said than done.

Just hang in there, at least you're acknowledging that you are replacing the habit, now work on replacing those habits with positive ones. For me it is not enough to quit something, I have to replace it with something.

I wish you the best of luck. And just want you to know you can overcome this. It won't be easy, but it is possible.

Maybe you could try a worry stone, or get a piece of fabric or something that you could carry in your pocket to pick at.

(((((ickydog))))) Thanks. It's a bit better now I've realised I'm doing it - it's easier to stop. (Did that make sense? Guess I'm not doing as well as I thought...)

Not your fault, Rio, not just a habit you can break but a medical condition. Do you have a therapist to help you with breaking the behaviors?

Thanks, Perna. I don't have a therapist at the moment, but I'm seeing one for a consultation in a couple of weeks.
