I live with Bipolar, BPD, anxiety and PTSD. I just wanted to give you my background a bit so maybe you can relate.

TRIGGER WARNING!

I went out of work on short term disability on July 22nd because I had to have surgery on my arm. I was supposed to go back to work in September, but the day before I was supposed to go back to work I purposely fractured my arm. My anxiety was sooo high about going back to work that I felt like I had to do something to keep me out longer. I know it's not right and I know that I shouldn't have done it, but I really don't want to go back to work.
I was honest with my therapist about it and she said "that is some serious anxiety that you would do that". Yup!

Anyway, has anyone else ever done something so drastic to stay out of work? How did you manage to go back (assuming you did)?

I've seriously injured myself, but not specifically to avoid work, but I don't work anyway!

Is there any specific concept about your work environment which explains the root of your anxiety? What worries you the most about work?

It would be useful if you could get help with your anxiety.

However to be perfectly honest, work is not for everyone. And it is possible that at this stage in your life, work is not the right thing for you- until you make more progress with your problems.

If you don't feel like you are able to work, it might be good to explain that to your doctor, maybe he can help you get some sort of income if you are not working for a while.

The other possibility is to try and get a different job that does not worry you as much.
Thanks for this!

I completely understand. Though, do you not like your work? I know with me, I just hated my job. I felt like everyone around me was lying and being unnecessarily mean to our clients. I would try to be very kind and understanding towards our clients, but that kindness wouldn't always be reciprocated, so that would make me stressed out as well.

Maybe make a pro and con list or your current job, and determine from there if its worth your worry. Maybe just the prospect of going back to work is stressful (like the first day of school for example! )

Anyways, I hope you fell better and your T can help you work things out!
Thanks for this!

I don't like my Supervisor, I have NO friends at work or anyone I can talk to, I have to take calls ALL day and I have a time limit, I worry that I am going to have an anxiety attack and don't want anyone to know.

I have a T that I just started working with and she is awesome, but I only get to see her one more time before I am supposed to go back to work.

I am going to talk to my psychiatrist tomorrow morning and I am going to have to be honest with him about what I did, so he can see the extent of my anxiety.

I am thinking I may need to be out of work for a while. But being out on disability I would have to go back to my job for 30 days so I don't have to pay back all of my medical expenses that i have accumulated. I know it's only 30 days, but it feels like forever!!!

I have thought of that, but the idea of doing an interview terrifies me!!! That's why I have stuck with my current job for 6 years. I have so much fear and anxiety that it eats me up!

Thanks and no I do not like my work. It's a call center and it's very fast paced......I don't do well under that type of pressure!

I understand your anxiety about work. My went from SI to suicidal thoughts from just the stress of working. I'm currently on disability and have been for years because of it. You're mind sounds like it's giving you a message that this isn't the job for you. I don't know what kind of call center it is, but when I worked, I did tech support. Not nearly as stressful as the boss and his BS. If I ever go back to work, I know now I can't handle a computer position. Can you change careers if needed? Maybe you can get off long enough to explore this further with you therp. Good luck!

I would really talk to your psychiatrist and see what happens. I know it depends on where you live but there are often ways to manage the insurance to give you some more time to start working through this with your T. In a bit of time you might find that you could manage a few weeks and start looking elsewhere.
