Hey. You. Yes, you. I'm talking directly to you and all the others here.
Stop. Stop whatever you are doing right now. Drop everything. Is it important? My dear, I don't give a damn. Even if you're talking to Barack Obama right now, just stop. Are you stopped? If now, do that right now. If you still can't stop, don't read on, because what I'm going to say next requires your undivided attention. First, I want you to breathe. In and out. Nice, slow, deep. Focus on the feeling of the air going in and out of your lungs. Once you are sufficiently relaxed, read on. Next, I want you to think about the last time you self injured. Doesn't matter when. Doesn't matter how. If you self-injured, think about that. Minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years. Doesn't matter. I understand if thinking about it hurts you or gives you urges, but don't act upon those. Not right now. More important **** is coming up and you can't be doing anything else. Now, I want you to think about why you self injured. One reason? One hundred reasons? I don't give a damn how many, it's what they were that counts. Think of them as intimately as you can. Get detailed. Sherlock Holmes got detailed; can you be like Sherlock Holmes? If you feel as if thinking about a certain event will trigger a downward spiral, don't do this part; at least, don't get as detailed. While you're at it, go ahead and think of other stressful events that have happened in the past, near present, hell, even ones that might happen in the future. It may also help to think that you are Sherlock. He never acted without having sufficient data first. "You can't make bricks without clay," as he says. Once you've thought of your events, I want you to find something - a piece of paper, a scroll of parchment, an Ancient Roman wax tablet - it doesn't matter what, just find one. Get a writing utensil. Now, write. Write. Write write write. Write whatever the hell your brain wants you to do. Don't think. Be like Kerouac or Burroughs (just don't get all weird and ****.) Stream of consciousness is a powerful tool. It's your personal Excalibur, and most people take theirs for granted. I've learned to sheath and unsheathe it on demand and I can now write out page after page of ****. This entire thing is stream of consciousness, all from one little idea in the back of my head. Anyway, just write. Write until your hands cramp. Write until your tears of happiness, anger, sadness, whatever they may be have stained your paper thoroughly and you can't see through the blur. Write until your pencil or pen runs out of ink or lead. WRITE. When you're done writing, continue on to the next step. Read what you wrote. You may be surprised (or not) at what you put down. Remember, stream of consciousness entails little to no thinking, so you shouldn't really know what you put down until you're read it. I want you to read every last word meticulously, as if it is the last *******ed thing you'll ever see. Once you've read all of it, I want to you to take that piece of paper and rip it out of a notebook. If it is loose-leaf, you're good. Once you have that paper in your hands, RIP THE DAMNED THING INTO SHREDS. Does it feel good? Imagine all of your worries being torn apart. You wrote them all on the paper, right? All of your self-conscious thoughts that are on that paper are getting pulled apart, too. Every bad thing on there is being pulled apart. Now, if there are happy memories on there, don't feel bad for ripping those up. You'll always have those. This is just an exercise in getting rid of unhappy **** that can lead to self-injury. Dispose of the paper in whatever way you see fit. Burn it or simply throw it away, it doesn't matter. Do you feel a little better? Even the tiniest little bit? I hope this helped you. Every time the stress is piling up and you're about to self injure, I want you to remember this and what I put, and do this. Unsheathe your Excalibur and ride into battle. Do this not for me, but for yourself. If this worked, Congratulations. You just earned yourself another coping mechanism. If this was not effective, keep trying. Find an outlet. Some people just can't enjoy writing, and that's perfectly acceptable. Music is some people's forte; cooking for others. Go through the different areas as you see fit. Find something. Do it for you, and only you, because you matter, damn it! Have a good night. You deserve it.
