How do you all feel about scarification/body modification?
I saw a link on my fb because I like tattoos, and they happened to be showing off pics of scarification (fresh and healed). A shudder went through my spine when I saw it, but then I thought of the reaction someone else might have to my reaction to it ("How does that bother you but you can do similar things to yourself?!"). For me, self-injury has huge emotional benefits and is done for specific reasons. It is always me who does it to myself - I have control over it. I also don't think I could handle the pain of someone else cutting into me enough to form such extensive and specific scarring. I stop my own si when I start to feel pain, so I think someone else doing it to me would actually be really triggering (throw-back to a recurring nightmare I used to have growing up and several instances of abuse). Is scarification something you would ever opt for as an alternative to si? Why or why not? (I guess I'm curious what others' reactions are to it, and what you think are your reasons for your reactions). (If you don't know what I'm talking about, you can click this possibly triggering link. Please don't look it up if seeing blood or cuts is triggering). |

I couldn't let someone cut me, for me cutting or other SI is about having that control when I feel the most out of control. Letting someone else do it would probably make me feel more out of control.
However I do get tattoos because I enjoy the feeling...but it's more actually a relaxing feeling than pain and I get artwork from it if that makes sense. |

that makes perfect sense, because I feel the same way about most of mine... there are 2 that really hurt (I have 9), and they were triggering, but the others were just like being drawn on by a heavy handed person...
