So, I'm 22, live on my own, but am very close with my parents and rely on them for quite a lot of things in my daily life.

My mom and dad have kept sharp objects away from me since I was a kid because I was a klutz but I also think because they don't like sharp things… but my mom caught me cutting once while I was in crisis and took away all the knives from my apartment - including kitchen knives - until I convinced her it was a one time incident because I was suicidal.

I've been cutting again and my mom is coming to stay with me tonight, but my whole leg is covered in cuts because of how much I've been struggling. I'm scared she's going to see and flip out. I'm going on a trip this weekend, and I don't want her to stop me and forbid me from going or put me in hospital which she would. She knows I haven't been doing well, but I'm not suicidal at all.

Has anyone else told their parents, or had their parents find out? What happened? Is there any way I can explain to her it's not dangerous right now, and to drop the issue?

My best suggestion would be to cover it up because you don't really know how she could react, or easily she will be convinced. Long pj's and a tank top should be less obvious/easier to hide. I'm sorry. Good luck!

I think if you want to share with your mother what's been happening, one of the best ways to go about telling a parent is to ask your therapist (or any professional you're working with) to have a meeting with your parent(s) and explain to them in a professional way that self harm =/= suicidal.

Thanks guys. I made it through the night. She almost walked in when I was changing but it all worked out. Though now I am thinking about how I should handle this if it happens again. Your comments help. I might talk with my case manager when she gets back.
