Why do we do it? Why not create new ones?

I think I do it more out of a compulsion, maybe not to the point of dermatillomania (...maybe) but just because I prefer the open smooth wound over the lumpy scar. Also, I choose not to make new ones because I still am content from the effects of the previous cuts as long as they are red or bloody (sorry if tmi)

I do it so that I can say that I "haven't" self harmed since the last time I cut. I tend to use it as a loophole.

I do it because I cannot bear the itch from a healing wound.

I personally don't reopen a scar. I have some sort of personal aversion to it. I don't know why. I'd rather start clean. If it's old enough that it's just a dark line, I might.

As for the itching, in a way, it's a tolerable pain and a constant reminder. Might also help me harm less. I just scratch around it. That helps.

I personally don't reopen scars either, mainly because I don't want anything unhygienic happening. But if it's old enough that it's barely there, I might just to minimize the surface area of my scars.
