Trigger warning, explicit harm descriptions
I normally cut on the inside of my upper arm, and sometimes burn my wrist. The burns are visible, but that's okay because it's a typical place to burn accidentally, eg oven, pan etc. I don't cut deep, and the cuts normally go within a week or so. Which was fine when I was doing it once a month or so because, alternating with my tummy, it wasn't noticeable. I'm harming more at the moment, maybe twice a week or more. I'm worried that my arm will be more obvious. I can't think where else to do it, cos my h sees me every day at least in bra and knickers, so thigh tummy etc wont work. Where do other people do it? Do you want your cuts to be visible, or is it important to hide them? If you do them so they're visible, eg wrist, does it help when people see them? Just curious I guess, and wondering about how we are all so different.... |

I don't do it where they can be seen. I go swimming with my children 3 or 4 times a week, so they have to be covered up. Mainly my stomach area. I SI on the outside of my thighs occasionally but only if I know it wont scar.
Once or twice I have done it on my chest area too, and quite liked that.

I usually do the upper outside of my arm and just wear longer sleeved shirts. I know there's easier places to hide but I can't bring myself to do it anywhere else. To me it is important that i hide them. I never do my cuts deep, so they heal relatively quickly. Also because I keep them to a more confined space, I can cover them up with a big band aid and wear tank tops and play it off as an accident where I cut my arm. I've not had a problem with people noticing my cuts.....yet.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm not sure I should be saying this but I find that a good place is under the breast area. So that way, if you're to have on a bra it is still not noticeable. Heck, if you're naked its not really noticeable unless you lift up your breast (and i'm not heavy chested). I do my upper upper thighs (short shorts usually hide them) but I can't gaurantee your husband won't see that. I have done the inside of my upper arm - the underarm would be a really good place but probably uncomfortable. There's also the bottom of the feet (which i've done; not a fan of) and elbows that people don't usually look at. I've burned my hand "accidentally" with a glue gun - I find that using objects that make sense are easier to be honest about without a million questions. Also, I would consider less scarring things; I find that pricking with the diabetic needles helps with me because they hurt, bleed a good bit but leave almost no scar and really are a safe alternative to more drastic measures of self harm. My career and life circumstances don't allow me freedom to "not care" about these things so i've learned a few tricks. These tricks, as a result, keep the harm controlled and with little risk of accidents or infection. Of course, stopping all together would really just completely fix the problem. ![]()

My husband sees every where. I couldn't even get away with my inner ankle. So I eventually stopped hiding it from him if he wants to see all of me, love all of me this is part of me. I still hide it from my son but have messed up a couple times.

Thanks everyone.
Teal, I have a needle phobia! Otherwise that sounds like a good way to conceal.... Hadn't thought of under breast area.... Sharing with h not an option. It is people's expectation that I'm sane, normal and okay which keeps me that way iykwim ![]() |

I switched long ago from burning to banging my head on hard surfaces. The pain is more intense than any burning or cutting and it does not leave scars. Yes you get a lump and if you hit your forehead a bruise can show up but that is easily explained away. I have never knocked myself out. I do resort to punching myself during times of extreme stress and have given myself a black eye. Still easy to explain away. I am glad to report I have not had to self harm in several weeks.

Looking for safety, protection, being cherished and loved can often be normal unmet needs in childhood, and the survivor searches for these in other adults. This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors. |

I used to burn and cut my forearms and biceps and triceps. During this time period, I wore hoodies every day, even in summer, so it was hardly ever noticed. The few times anyone saw...well, nobody bothered asking, they knew they'd not get an answer anyway.
I also used to punch and slap my face, but I so rarely saw anyone for several hours after I'd do it, by the time I saw someone any swelling would go down. I gave myself a black eye once, and blamed it on a box falling on me from a shelf. |

I normally cut in places that most people won't see (upper arms, upper thighs, stomach).
Right now, I am trying to figure out a safe place because I am having surgery on my hip on the 23rd, and will have a preop physical a few days earlier and definitely do NOT want the doctors to know whats going on (because then I risk them telling my family) |

I cut on the inside of my whole arm, and sometimes hips, and have had over 150 fresh cuts on my arm at once and no one saw. In the house, I usually didn't wear a jacket, but I am very good at watching my surroundings and watching people's eyes and turning my arm so that it is hidden. Outside I usually always have a jacket with me and I would either be wearing it, or have it covering my arm if its too hot out to wear it. Thankfully I get cold very easily so I use to wear a jacket a lot before, so no one notices. Once the cuts have healed and are noticeable scars I usually stop wearing my jacket as much and just watch people more closely. I don't care about scars as much because if someone asks, I can just say it was in my past.

It feels wrong to tell you this since everything on here is supposed to help, not tell you how to do it.. but I usually do it all on my chest area (close to my breasts) because I Always wear a sports bra so that covers it up..
