What would it take for you to get help? It can be scary, but it isn't so bad once you know what is involved. I'm a lot more scared of not having therapy now than I ever was of asking for help (which was significant). You don't have to settle for this. What can we do to help you here? I think that coming here is a step towards getting help too. If you didn't want help, I don't think you would be here.

Rap

I don't know. The last time I tried, I had a panic attack. It really scares me. I'm starting to think the only way is if someone drug me down the street kicking and screaming.

I haven't had panic attacks myself, but I understand they are pretty scary. I also know for a fact that nobody ever died from one (although it might feel that way). So you might have a panic attack. Which is worse? Having a panic attack, or never being able to get help and being stuck with the way things are for the rest of your life? What's the worst that can happen, even if you have a panic attack?

I agree with Rapunzel on this.

Don't give up, I know it's scary to ask for help (and I know about the panic attacks ... ick) but I know that you know that it's a good thing to try. Good for you for at least reaching out for help here.

Fifth Sonata I understand how you feel. After many years I went to see someone. And I was terrified and it took me a while to not feel that way when I saw her. But I stuck with it and it has been the best thing I have ever done. I hope that you do not wait the years I did as I could have been a much happier person for those years.

I hope you reconsider finding help. If it is too intimidating right now maybe you can stay with us and get used to finding support. I look forward to getting to know you.

Please take care.

Thanks for everyone's comments! I really appreciate it.

I think it's just all in my head and I'm making myself crazy. Let the people who really need therapy get it.

Yeah, I've tried that one too. If you are hurtting yourself, there is a reason for it. We can't just stop all that without help. Well, maybe you can pretend it isn't really there, but how long will that last?

I hope I'm not pushing you too hard, but you sound like you want help and you're just afraid to get it. What are you afraid of, besides panic attacks? I mean, if you weren't afraid of something you wouldn't have a reason to panic. I wonder if you don't feel like you deserve to get better (drawing on my own history again on that one 4/1/07 ).

I really wish I had had the courage to seek help many years ago. I am scarred all over my body and can't even fulfill my role at work because of my scars (i.e. when we take the kids swimming each week I am the only staff member who can't go). I finally got myself into therapy last year, which was when I FELT ready and felt able to ask for help. I also found a therapist who I felt completely comfortable with and who I trust and have a great relationship with. I tried asking for help for 14 years before I finally got there- each time I would chicken out or ignore the appts... I really hope that you are able to find the courage to get the help you deserve (and you deserve as much help as the person beside you...). At least you have found PC, and you will get as much love and support here as you could ever hope for 4/1/07 Good luck.

I waited 20 years to get help with depression - I hope with all the support from here that you don't wait any longer. I wish I had had this kind of encouragement from so many people.
