Hi. I'm just wondering. Recently I have been told that I am addicted to self harming, now this really annoys me. But I was just wondering if other people feel the same way as me or do see it as an addiction
Thanks |

Hello ClumsySmurf85: To answer your question... yes... I do believe there can be an addictive quality to self-harm. At least that has been the case for me in the past. I don't know why that is. But I do believe it is the case. At least at the time, the more I did it, the more I wanted to do it.
![]() What may annoy you about being told you are addicted to self-harming is that whoever is saying it is sort-of suggesting that you could just stop if you really wanted to. In that context, it's really sort-of a back-handed put-down. And that certainly would be annoying. ![]() ![]() I see this is your first post here on PC. So... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I have been a cutter for decades , didn't really know why until about 6 years ago , I haven't cut in over 4 years... Longest time I have ever gone !
I did self harm because I had no self worth and self loathing I literally hated myself .... Self harm is an endorphin rush and additive. I got very lucky once and self harm damn near killed me. Stay safe

I am of two minds about this on one hand I wonder if our brains just know its a reliable coping skill and there for using it repetitively and on the other hand I defiantly think that SI can be very addictive

Do you think you choose SH to mask other feelings or disorders?

I have never thought about it really. I have sh for the past 15years. I only donut when I feeling really depressed and angry. But I don't do it every time I feel that way. That's why I don't think I am addicted

I used to SH and I never really understood the science behind it until my p'doc told me and it made sense.
When our bodies are injured (accidentally or not) our bodies automatically release endorphins that make us feel better. For me I would rather feel physical pain because I could control it rather than the emotional pain because that gets so overwhelming. |
