Agreed not to hurt myself. Which makes me want to hurt myself more. Anybody know any good books about recovering from mental illness?

Glad you were able to make a contract. Keep breathing. There are a lot of good resourses in the top of this forum... about urge surfing and such... as for books, there's tons - just matters which work *for you*. I'd go and hang out in the self help section of the nearest book store. actually, not a bad idea for myself... tonight seems like it may be a hard one...

or your local library is good and free! Albert Ellis a Guide to rational living is good - I have trouble getting through books though so leaf through a few and see if you can find one that is good for you

Hi Happy1, I am also a teenager and am having the same troubles. When a therapist has anyone sign a contract, I think that everyone then has the urge to hurt even more. I think that the best thing that you can do in that situation would be to include a positive reinforcement if you are able to stay safe. Ex: Session time is used in a different direction, like you can talk about your current event issue or most troublesome thing that causes you to self-harm. PM me anytime. I know exactly how you feel. Why don't you try safety conracting with yourself with a formal set up or crisis plan. Try my simple fill out paper that I use for myself. See if this is effective or bring it to your therapist to create a more flexible contract. (It's a word document for Microsoft, jsut copy and paste it to Microsoft)

Here is also a page that you can put onto Microsoft and print out to keep in hand when you don't feel safe:
“Just stop, press the pause button like a movie because what has happened doesn’t matter, you’re in the now, change what is happening now and forget about the past” “Cutting is really doing nothing; it’s a waste of time and is only going to ruin your life” “Do something instead of cutting to get yourself out of the problem of feeling nothing, take a hot or cold shower, just don’t be in for too long”
