My gran did for nearly as long as i knew her... some 25 years of my life and maybe before. then suddenly she just stopped out of the clear blue. I'd always known her with scabs all over her arms - never stopped her from wearing sleveless shirts, and picking all day and night.

I bite off my nails, then bite off the skin around the nail.

You're picking at yourself because it is addicting. It imediately sends endorphines to the rush and help you feel relieved ASAP. It's helping you calm down with your stressors in life and also to avoid as much emotional pain. I know that it's hard to stop, but I care about you and want you to feel better. Here is some distress tolerance quotes from my therapist word for word. I hope that you can really take this advice and help yourself.

Just stop, press the pause button like a movie because what has happened doesn ’ t matter, you ’ re in the now, change what is happening now and forget about the past ”
“ Cutting is really doing nothing; it ’ s a waste of time and is only going to ruin your life ”
“ Do something instead of cutting to get yourself out of the problem of feeling nothing, take a hot or cold shower, just don ’ t be in for too long ”

PM me anytime. I'd love to keep in touch. Caring for you so much and hope that you overcome this habit as best as you can.

The idea is simply not to allow yourself to get lost in regrets about past or worries about the past or worries about the future. If you are firmly in the present moment, the past can be an object of inquiry, the object of your mindfulness by looking into the past, but you are still grounded in the present moment"

I agree with Dance that it is a chemical reaction. I will pick at scabs and keep going until sometimes an infection starts to form. I did it as a kid and never thought anything of it until a few years ago when I cut for the first time. It is just another way of avoiding what is going on and in a way is soothing.

Now, when I catch myself starting to do it I stop and ask myself what is going on and if there is something else I can do so I don't hurt myself and yet can when I need that "rush" I can get that also. It can be as simple as jumping up and down, doing anything physical, doing something for someone else, just anything to distract you and start to make new mind/body connections.

I have scars all over my arms and I wish that I had known at the time what I was doing but as with all things it takes time and a desire to change.

Keep on posting and letting us know how you are doing...
