Taking supplements?

What to Know Before You Take Herbal Supplements

I do take a multivitamin, Vitamin D3, Vitamin K, fish oil, Glucosine (whatever it's called for joint health), and have taken ginger for nausea.

I tried St. John's Wort years ago for depression and it didn't help.

What do you take? Does it help?

There was an interesting article in this month's Reader's Digest about Vitamin D. It talked about how important it is, and how we might be avoiding the sun too much. It even mentioned that certain diseases are more likely in people with low levels--including coronavirus.

So it's out to sit on my back porch as soon as it stops raining!

I agree! My daughter always avoided the sun. Always. If she absolutely had to be in the sun she would cover herself up. It's true that she does have gorgeous skin, flawless. But...

a few years ago, she told me that she was feeling very unwell. Terribly low energy, nausea, and her hair, which is extremely thick, was falling out. She was concerned and so was I. Well, she went to her GP and the doctor tested her for this and that. Eventually my daughter found out that her vitamin D level was so low that her GP was considering hospitalizing her.

N. was prescribed a large daily dose of vitamin D and instructed to sit in the sun every day at 10 a.m., for 10 minutes. She followed the instructions and her health improved within a month.

I was a '70's sun worshiper, burned and tanned all summer, every summer. That worries me, now. But I believe there's a happy medium. Never exposing ourselves to the sun cannot possibly be healthy.

Two alcoholic drinks a day may slow mental decline, study finds

I wonder if grape juice has the same effects. I don't like alcohol, plus I can't drink because of the meds I take.

Hairdressers reopen this week, but should you actually stay grey?

I chose to go gray a number of years ago. And actually I still have some brown hair, even though I'm 65. I don't like the chemicals used in parlors to dye hair and I am too lazy to use those rinses. I'm earned every gray hair and I'm showing them off!

Most evidence is correlational and people who drink 1-2 glasses a day (and not less and not more) are often people who engage in many proven healthy behaviors and have other good things going for them such as socioeconomic status, and those things and not alcohol explain positive health outcomes. Do not worry that you cannot drink and do not like to. Just do things that are proven to health, such as exercising.

It's true that supplements may be helpful, but, please do your research before taking anything new and definitely check with your doctor if you are on prescribed medications. Make sure the supplement is of quality. A lot of companies use ingredients that are marginal at best, especially discount houses. Before I buy a supplement, I always research it on the internet, read the reviews and make comparisons.

Vitamin D is one of those supplements that is more effective in liquid form. You should buy the best quality Vitamin D you can afford, as the cheap ones don't do very much once ingested.

I take a probiotic for women daily. I also use an herbal respiratory product because I have asthma and breathing issues at times. I recently found a local herbal product for boosting memory that has an added benefit of supporting blood building. I can tell a difference in energy when I take it. I think the reason it's labeled as helping memory is due to it's ability to perk up one's energy and that clears the mind and improves clarity of thinking.

I try to avoid prescription medicine unless absolutely necessary, like an antibiotic or an antiviral. I am blessed with good health except for my lungs which tend toward weakness. I use herbal remedies and homeopathic remedies as much as possible, with good results. I was married to a Chinese medicine practitioner years ago and learned a lot. I have also studied herbs and have prepared tinctures. I use essential oils for health and beauty. There is a lot of great research available online if you are so inclined.

I am a massive Vitamin D fan. I was diagnosed as deficient in 2008.

Prior to that, for my entire life, I would have a nasty head cold (or two) usually around Valentines day that would wreck me for week. But the moment I took the Vitamin D, this ended - forever. I have had exactly two serious colds in 12 years. And most years I don't have a cold at all.

I suspect, however, sun doesn't do it. There are just too many factors to reliably get it that way. I take a supplement.

There was only a blood test to measure Vitamin D approved in the 1990s. Think about it, for most of humanity we likely didn't get enough D (because we live in houses and have clothing) and didn't know we were deficient and now we can see if we are deficient and correct it via supplementation.

I take all the B vitamins, D, krill oil (doesn’t taste as bad and smaller capsules than fish oil) and melatonin.

I read the same thing about vitamin D. A little sun boosts mood! Maybe it’s the vitamin D.

Mum had an appointment today with a pharmacist. They went over all her meds, prescription and OTC and made changes. Because of her age(94) she is to take less Tylenol than she was, stopped another OTC and switched her to a different blood thinner. Because I go to the same clinic I could do that too but right now I'm in the middle of getting tests. I'm on about 15 pills total. 9 prescription and my doctor knows all of my OTC Supliments.

Where I give blood told me that my hemoglobin was too low twice in a row. I bought iron pills but didn't start taking them. My doctor was glad and told me not to take them until they found the cause and told me I'm anemic. So just a cautious reminder to let your doctor know before you start herbs or Supliments on your own.

My doc approves of all of my supplements or even prescribed them for me. But, yes, we shouldn't just take them wily nily.

Reminds me of a tennis match in Australia I saw on TV. The entire audience, and I mean everyone, had a hat on and it was hilarious watching all the hats turn as the ball went back and forth.

Ah the sun. In the 60's we lathered in baby oil and other products that promoted tanning--living within hitching distance of the ocean---when I see those kind of tans now they look unhealthy...now in my late 60's the skin is definitely aging faster than people I know who wore hats and screen and sunglasses etc....
ah well....
No supplements. Only meds fluoxetine and clonazepam and I am trying to wean down and (hopefully) off those now that I am no longer working or caring for other family members. (I should let my grown kids know so that they let me know if I send out "crazy" signals....)
