I'm a single male 19 years old ! i've been addicted to masturbation for 6 years. I've been lying to my self all this time that anything is Ok! but i was feeling guilty and so lonely. no girlfriend no friends just living a lonely life and pretending that everything's ok. i masturbate once in three days some times everyday! i read many posts and i've seen many ways to overcame this addiction but every time i tried i failed. I'm not very social i spend the most of my time watching Japanese manga hoping that i can fight and beat my addiction.
this is the first time i'm sharing my story i hope i can get help from someone ! Sorry for my bad English. |

Welcome to PsychCentral, TheWindOfChange
Masturbation is something to be ashamed of it is part of being human. As you get older you will slow down some; however it is also good for your health to as it helps to remove semen build-up. However if you really feel that you want to break away from it have you tried an accountability partner? This is a person that checks in on you from time to time to see how you are doing. This helps to keep you from masturbating if you don't want to say that you did. Of course it is not a full proof system. Best wishes |

I masturbated too and, then when I got a boyfriend I was able to stop and, now ever since I've been relapsing into it. There are a lot lonely people like you, maybe if you get a boyfriend/girlfriend you may be able to overcome this. TRUST ME real sex feels better than masturbation! Lot's of people are lonely maybe, you could find a partner who likes Japanese manga. |

I don't think masterbating once every three days or even once a day is an addiction. I don't think its addiction until it causes you problems. Are you hurting yourself masterbating but doing it anyway? Are you not doing activities you want to do instead staying home to masterbate? If you are canceling plans so you can stay home and masterbate then you ight have a problem.
Honestly I don't think even masterbating every day is a problem. It makes you feel good and relieves stress and tension. |

Hi
There is nothing with masturbating unless it is causing you problems in your life. It is perfectly natural and the frequency you speak of is totally normal. What you should be focusing on is your loneliness. What issues keep you from meeting or being with other people? If you are happy to be alone than fine, I also sometimes like solitude but not if for unhealthy reasons. __________________ ’’In the end, it’s not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away’’ |

I do it more than once a day . I've had sex already but that doesn't seem to help for me .
I don't know what to think. I have many other problems that don't make me a suitable boyfriend/husband, so I remove myself from the dating scene. I am scared it lowers sperm count or makes me infertile, but then again, I'm not really planning to have children, since I'm not planning to marry a woman, since I'm not good boyfriend/husband material. I'm confused . |

Despite all the wonderfully positive responses here, I can tell you that masturbation is very unhealthy, especially for men.
And if you're doing it every day then I would say it is an addiction. Also the biggest myth is that you need to masturbate to release old sperm. That sperm simply reabsorbs back into the body. Last edited by Anonymous200125; Oct 18, 2014 at 02:37 PM.. |

I can, though I expect it to be scoffed at. But I can tell you that when a man ejaculates he gives out loads of minerals which can take between a week to three weeks to replace. He also gives away brain and spinal fluid, and too much ejaculation will make a man anxious and depressed.
A man loses lots of zinc in semen, that zinc is needed for the prostate and too much could also lead to hair loss. I say this, because I personally have cut down and have noticed the mental clarity and physical changes in terms of fitness. It's actually the ejaculation that's the problem, not the masturbating. |

Zinc has links to testosterone levels in men, so losing a lot of Zn makes testosterone less available to do it's job, it's almost like it's bounded. Your free levels are lower and this has an effect on many things in men. Often when you want to increase your testosterone levels, they will give you a Zn supplement.

So going by some of what has been said, it is also unhealthy for a man to have sex? It may be true re the zinc but what I am asking is, when does it become a problem? __________________ ’’In the end, it’s not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away’’ |

The last line made me smile slightly as speaking purely for myself (just on the off chance I get some bemused correction that some guys derive pleasure of the erection but no outcome... which in terms of the snip or some other medical reason I could understand)... masturbating without any intent to ejaculate kind of defeats the object does it not? __________________ Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA): UK |

When a man has (unprotected ) sex, his penis absorbs fluids from the vagina, which contain zinc. So it's not as bad, but if he's using a condom then he is harming himself just as badly as if he was jerking off every day.

And it is possible for a man to have sex and not ejaculate. Dry orgasms. |

Masturbation is great. I have sex with my partner of three years and still masturbate. Like the users above have said, it is only an addiction when it interferes with your life. From what you have described, I highly doubt you have an addiction.
