I've had my problems with an addiction to this. When I'm bored, I tend to delve into my fantasies, and there's only way I can deal with it, and this has many times made me miss work, or ignore/avoid people and priorities. When I have nothing much to do, i like to do it. I'm kind of embarrassed of saying this, but I don't 'climax', I withhold it for as long as possible, so I can be aroused four hours on end, sometimes it causes me to ache in the belly. When I do 'climax' it feels great initially, but after, I feel horrible, filled with regret and shame and guilt. I do this all in secret, nobody knows this, to them, I look like a saint. I feel like I'm fooling them too, which adds to the guilt.
I masturbate on average once a day at least, and on sundays I'd say 2 to 4 times? When nobody is around, I like to be aroused whole day. Even if i don't masterbate, i'd say i'd try to arouse myself for at least a few hours when I can't. I HAVE NO SELF CONTROL. I had some striking hair loss recently, after my masturbaton has been at an all time high, I went to the doc, and all the tests they did came out just fine, He couldn't find a reason, he gave me some pills that inhibit DHT production. He asked me if I work out, I don't. Then as a 'final straw' after he exhausted everything else, I guess, he said "Do you masturbate often?", being as embarrassed as I am, I said i don't, but then he said something about masturbation producing testosterone, which produces DHT, which COULD cause hair loss, the key word he said is "COULD". This stuck me, because I can't find a reason myself. My own experience is that I do see more hair lost when I shower after masturbation. Maybe it's just me, but Could there be a connection? Maybe because I'm doing it way too often for my own good? I know there are no studies about this, but is there a connection between increased DHT or hair loss and masturbation? I'm sorry if this is a silly question. I have had the chance of having real sex, but I'm just not interested in it? I'm not sure why, but masturbation is a real huge need for me? how do I control my 'horniness'? I am EXTREMELY 'horny' (sorry of all these terms I'm using) from around 3 AM to 7 AM, I get up, hard, aroused, sleep deprived and with an irresistable urge to masturbate. I'm almost a different person around this time period. It is the time of the day when I do things I end up regretting. Please help me ![]() |

Well, I don't really know too much about this. Evidently in men, excessive (whatever that means) masturbation can cause a rise in testosterone with a corresponding rise in DHT. But, the genetics have to be there for this to happen so ...
The thing to do would be to try Propecia ( Finasteride - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) If it is from a build-up of DHT, then Propecia would stop the hair loss. The thing to keep in mind though is that if it really is masturbation causing DHT buildup, then the genetics for hair loss were already there and just accelerated by that DHT increase. It is/was going to happen anyway. If the Propecia doesn't have any effect, then it's not DHT. Did the doctor consider something as simple as stress? How are your stress levels? That can cause hair loss as well. |

Creatine Monohydrate also been linked to high DHT production.
OP my opinion, but you masturbate way too often. Try to limit it to no more then twice a week and ideally once a fortnight. |

My hair loss has been pretty sudden. I'm not going bald, but I don't want to. It's worrying. It's a nightmare to me, especially since hair is essential to me. Thank you very much for responding, I would also take only this hair loss issue to a more appropriate sub section on psych central, if someone could guide me, it'd be great. ![]() |

Yes I would think it is bad. Because you're doing this to hold onto fantasy for as long as possible. Where you're masturbating for hours on end you will kill ( if you haven't already) the sensitivity to your penis and sex with a woman will not feel anywhere near as good. I recommend you get a fleshlight and avoid using your hands, but limit the use. Don't masturbate every day.

Well since you are on a mental health forum and do not report having cancer,, the first question to you is what medications you take. Depakote, e.g., causes hair loss in many people. Geodon does, to a lesser extent. List your medications and for each, read abouts the side effects it causes on rxlist. I am surprised the GP didn't do that. Do you have a pdoc? If you have a pdoc, and are taking psych meds which are known to cause a wide variety of side effects, some common, such as weight gain, and some rare, such as weight loss, then if you experience a sudden anything, your first response should be to report it to the pdoc, not GP. Whoever prescribes most of your meds, be it an endocrinologist, neurologist, or pdoc should be the first person to learn of any unusual changes.
ok, so assuming that it is not a medication side effect, the next step is to clear up your mind, which currently is very seriously messed up. E.g. that talk about other people thinking that you are a saint and that your guilt increases from your realizing that you are fooling them - all of that should go down the drain ASAP. Given your habits, you should, for now, regard them all as a neutral activity you choose to engage in in your private time. Since you do not owe others reports on what you do with your private time, other people have no right to create any sort of expectation of what you choose to do in your private time, from picking your nose to running a marathon, you cannot, by definition, disappoint and much less fool them. masturbation used to be considered highly harmful to men, and men used to be believed, by the medical community back then, to have a syrictly rationed lifetime supply of semen. All sorts of things, not excluding adolescent acne, used to e attributed to masturbation, but later such connections were disproved. It is unclear whether the hair loss connection is one of those scary tales given the current revived attention to masturbation or has some basis in solid science. You may simply, as Webgoji mentioned, have inherited the genes of early baldness. How are or were your male relatives in that department is another relevant question your GP forgot to ask... Re controlling your thoughts - before you attempt to control your fantasy life, which is difficult, you should clear up your irrational beliefs (see above), which should be easy. Once you are free from the feelings of shame, guilt, and being out of control, you will be a much stronger and more grounded man who would then be able to say to himself: "boy, it feels good but I better call it a day for now because I need to leave for an appointment I can't miss. That is ok, as there will be another time." Also, you might be feeling some rush from living what you believe is a double life. Once you realize that you don't and once you take your habits off their twisted pedestal and onto the ground of fairly mundane things you do, you migjt feel less compulsion in the absence of that extra rush. Finally, try using the time you spend being aroused but not physically masturbating by using something creative or productive. Channel the energy, so to speak. |

The only advice I would say is never lie to your doctor. Why bother asking random strangers on the internet about your problems if you can't even address them to someone who's EXPERIENCED and QUALIFIED to help you?

![]() I am not on any other meds. I did goto an endocrinologist, the tests came out normal. The minoxidil was prescribed to me by a trichologist, actually, it was him that suggested I get all these other tests done first, and they came out fine. He did ask me about any history of baldness in my family tree. He did ask me if i was on meds. There hasn't really been any sudden change I can think of. I have this to say, I've had my mental health issues since I was a kid, my parents well, every time I tried to hint to them that I may have problems, or that I needed help, they just liked to convince me it was just an attitude problem, and that I need to 'mature' or something. "You're a perfectly normal kid" is what my mother said. I'm only now starting to live independently, I don't want to blame them, I'd like to work on my issues from now. My mind is pretty messed up, my thoughts and worries overwhelm me often. and this hair loss thing has only added to my woes. I've always been reclusive, but it's at an all time high now. As for the guilt I feel, I have no idea what others do in their private time, and there's really no way of knowing, or asking. I get this false impression that they probably don't do it. I feel ashamed of myself sometimes. when I'm pleasuring myself, I'd like to think I'm 'someone else', In my fantasies I'm not 'me'. Is there a way to 'channel the energy' so as to speak? I'll try.... |

Read this forum for two months. You will get enough of a glimpse into the private lives of others. And be patient with yourself as you are just striking out on your own for the first time.

You should always remember who is paying whom. The thing that often screws up patient/dr relationship is forgetting that the dr is a service provider whom you have hired to help you, and not an authority figure. Beating yourself up over being unwise is not effective, but remembering that you, or the insurance to which you pay a premium, pay the guy would place you on a firm ground in all your further dealings with him. Remember also that doctors, in general and with some notable exveptions, notoriously illiterate in most things sexual. They can prescribe Viagra at the first mention of ED, and as a result, viagra is overprescribed. Outside of Viagra, most of them lack education and training to address sexual matters.

It can give you a sense of euphoria that you don't normally get. It also can help you last longer when with a partner.....because you are actually "learning" control. As far as hair loss, no you would not have increased hair loss immediately after ANY activity...there simply is physiologically not enough time. Also I think you may have misunderstood your doctor (masturbation=bad)....it's entirely possible that what he was saying (and this is just how I would take it so it's pure conjecture on my part) was that higher testosterone levels can result in baldness (it can)...and he was merely asking if you had a high libido. Just something to consider..... There is propecia (I believe rx required, someone correct me if I'm wrong) It may affect your libido. And, as mentioned minoxidil (Rogaine) Masturbation does not cause hair loss. There is a libido/hair loss connection......but if it's preferable to you to have a lower libido, then that's a whole other debate that you have to have with yourself.....and it would involve messing with your hormones. Speaking from a woman's perspective and my own personal opinion....bald is a good thing. ETA.....NO GUILT....Repeat NO GUILT..... if it's all consensual either between you and you or you and another adult WHO IS ABLE TO GIVE CONSENT.... Chronic masturbation will destroy the sensitivity of your penis so much that you'll be incapable of maintaining an erection with a woman.

I typically masturbate once a day although from time to time I do it twice in one day, once in a very rare while I'll do it three times in one day but I can't even remember the last time I've done that, I can only remember 1 time I have done it four times in a single day and by the fourth time I was almost ready to pass out.

ok, here goes. I know this is an old thread, but I have to add my two cents. I am 51 years old, and have been a chronic masturbater since the age of 4 or 5, hard to remember exactly when I got started. (blame my father) in the 40 some odd years since, I have been known to masturbate multiple times a day. yes sometimes once a day, but more typically 2 - 6 times a day some days as many as 8. since I got on meds for my various medical issues, this has slowed down to more like once or three times a day (at age 51). so if anyone had a problem here, it is ME not the OP.
having said that, the desensitization issue I can tell you from experience does NOT make you unable to maintain an erection with a woman as expressed in this quote: Quote:
here again, this is MY experiences we are talking about here. other people will necessarily have different ones. regarding other issues and side effects I have experienced, as a very young child, yes my mother tried to make me feel bad about doing it whenever she caught me. so I learned how not to get caught. guilt? shame? a feeling of fooling everyone around me? nope, however a certain pleasure in indulging in something that was "wrong". that ended when I discovered a lot more people than just me succumbed to the pleasure. I was perhaps 7 or 8. after that I only had to hide it from public view. (washroom stall in school and later work, etcetera.) so now fast forward to age 51. I no longer hide it at home, but I don't flaunt it in front of everyone either. I read somewhere that in males at the age of 50 their testosterone production cuts in half. I don't know if this is true or not, I only know that one day I had a first "go" with normal expulsion, and the second "go" a few hours later was like shooting blanks. first time that ever happened. it was like someone flipped a switch. it has been that way ever since. very little semen for my efforts. this was about late 2012 early 2013. spoke to my doc about it, and he mentioned nothing about production levels, and so I concede that my meds may be the culprit. other than that the only things I have discovered as a result of my "over indulgence" is that while the desire to be with a woman is still as strong as it ever was, two different things enter the picture. first is the fact that you are used to providing your own relief, so "trying to get laid" becomes too much of a hassle. I mean Great if you can get it, but it becomes no big deal if you can't. (also if you get teased, you don't get blue balls, you take care of it.) another issue I have discovered is when you are with a woman. on the one hand the desensitization issue can sometimes work in your favor allowing you to last longer, giving her more pleasure. on the other hand, in my late 40's I discovered that even though I still had the desire, and the erection to be with a woman it just wasn't the same anymore. this might be age related, but it may also be a side effect. so because it didn't feel as good as it used to I began to lose interest in the middle of coitus. understand this, I did not lose my erection, and still do not have much problem getting one, but I lost INTEREST right in the middle of intercourse. so after that point it was "keep going for her pleasure" because I wasn't going to orgasm. don't get me wrong, it still felt good it just didn't feel like it used to. I don't know if the loosing interest is masturbation related, or if it is a mental thing, but I plan to bring it up in therapy if it lasts long enough. so as a hard core chronic masturbater I give you my experiences for you to draw your own conclusions.
