Is the porn induced erectile dysfunction real? There seems to be no scientific evidence in the form of peer reviewed original research, although there are a few sites centered around the issue with many men claiming to have this problem. Porn induced erectile dysfunction is said to be the phenomenon of men unable to achieve or maintain an erection during real sex due to possibly frequent and heavy viewing of and/or masturbating to pornography. This consumption of porn which may have gone on for many years in a man's life desensitizes them towards sex, and requires them to view more and more graphic pornography in order to achieve and maintain an erection. If porn induced erectile dysfunction is legitimate then what would be the treatment?

Hello Artorius Maximus: I'm sorry I do not know the answer to your question. One thing I do know is that guilt & shame, as well as worry, can themselves cause a man to lose his ability to maintain an erection. So my thinking would be that even if the viewing of porn itself doesn't cause problems, the guilt, shame & worry that often accompany it may well do so. Plus the simple process of aging can contribute to these sorts of problems as well. Under any circumstances, I'm not aware of any specific treatments that are available except for ED med's, of course.

I see this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral… from the Skeezyks! I hope you find the time you spend here to be of benefit.

Logic would suggest to me that removing the porn would be a beginning point, and welcome!

No problem with the first part, so now do you happen to know of any treatment for aging?!

Thank you for your warm welcome. I'm very young at the age of 28 and don't seem to have any physical problems thst would cause erectile dysfunction. I Eat very healthy and exercise, and I'm a healthy weight based on the body mass index. I think drugs like Viagra should be used as an absolute last option but that would be used to treat the physical causes of ED. Supposedly there can be physical and/or psychological causes for ED thst are documented. I felt that for me there is no question my ED is psychological in nature. I have no guilt or shame relating to the matter. Some psychological causes thst are documented pertain to depression, anxiety, person anxiety, low self esteem, etc... I do feel anxiety about my size (which is a normal size), my body (which is also healthy), and of course my ability to achieve and maintain and erection. The porn type ED is not supported in peer reviewed research but seems very plausible to me, and this is why I'am so concerned about it. I'm trying to abstain from porn and masturbation really for the rest of my life as a means to possibly resolve this issue. I can get erections still but they're not as hard or maintainable as they used to be. I get morning erections which really should rule out any physical cause of ED. This really pisses me off and no one ever discussed the possible negative side effects of porn but this may just be a new thing.

Thank you for your warm welcome. I don't have any shame or guilt and I'm 28 and am completely healthy. I eat healthy and exercise, and have morning erections and other erections which seems to eliminate any physical cause of ED.
I thought I'd have the psychological causes for ED. The psychological causes for ED include anxiety, depression, performance anxiety, low self esteem, etc... I do have probably performance anxiety, anxiety over my size (which is an average size), anxiety over maintaining an erection, and probably body image anxiety although my body is also pretty healthy. I didn't think any of those issues affected me since I still take a long time to get an erection even when I'm by myself and completely calm. I felt its plausible it could be porn because maybe now I require more and more graphic visual stimuli to become erect due to desensitization towards sex. Seems plausible and there are others who believe this but there isn't scientific evidence. This upsets me greatly that there isn't more reliable info on this. There have only been some studies and they show there is no link between porn and ED but I'm not convinced.

I've looked at those sites, and like I said there's no scientific studies that support this being true. Peoples supposed testimony on an unreliable commercial website doesn't make this thing real. Just because people look at porn and have ED doesn't mean that the two things are related. That's purely anecdotal. There needs to be cold hard peer reviewed studies to support this. So far there's only been a few recent studies and they've found no relation between porn and ED but there needs to be more studies to be really conclusive. Commercial websites are not a reliable source of information.
